Lemur and studiomux help for a newbie

Hi folks. I'm a new user of studiomux, having been a long-time but not very knowledgeable user of Lemur, which I'm using to host Composer Tools Pro. After a recent MacOS security update, the Lemur Daemon has been almost unusable, my iPad disconnects from it constantly, and I'm not able to open the Daemon on my computer to adjust anything there, the app is open, but no windows are visible. After struggling with this for a couple of months, I read that studiomux might be a better way to go when trying to get MIDI back and forth from my computer and Cubase.

I'm having an enormous amount of trouble figuring out how to get it happening, and I'm struggling to make sense of the manual, so I could use some talk-to-me-like-I'm-five-years-old assistance. No doubt I'm doing something that's obviously wrong, but I don't know Lemur or studiomux well enough to troubleshoot.

So here's how I've had things set up in the past, and effectively what I need to recreate: On my iPad, I'm running Lemur, and Composer Tools Pro 1.1.23 from MIDI Kinetics. It uses two MIDI ports from Lemur to get to it's interface bridge-y thing, MKConnect. In my Lemur setup I've been using Daemon 0 and Daemon 2. While I always have had my iPad plugged in to the USB on my computer, using a USB connection has been really unstable, so I use the wifi connection, and the connections are selected as my-computer.local(wifi): Daemon Output 0, etc. I'm right next to both my router and computer, so signal strength isn't a problem. In MKConnect, I've got Tablet 1 set as CT Pro 2 as the To & From. In Cubase I have a couple of Generic Remotes to handle the MIDI as recommended by MIDI Kinetics, and they've been set to Daemon 0.

Now, in studiomux, I've created two local MIDI ports, called CT Pro 1 & CT Pro 2. Both have their in and out ports on. Under the Remote Port side of things I can see all my Daemon ports as well as ports created by other applications. In Lemur, I've assigned the ins and outs of my MIDI target 0 to my-computer.local(Wifi): CT Pro 1, and MIDI target 0 to my-computer.local(Wifi): CT Pro 2. MKConnect has Tablet 1 set to CT Pro 2, and in Cubase I've got my Generic Remotes set to CT Pro 1 in the same manner that they used to be set to Daemon 0. All of this is done, and yet CT Pro is still showing that it's disconnected. I've tried a few tests, connecting Lemur to the iPad(Local) connections instead of my-computer(Wifi), but there's no change.

If anyone's got any ideas, I'd love to hear them. I'm really only needing MIDI back and forth at this point, not audio, so hopefully it's something that's fixable.

Thanks!

  • @GreenWire : have you tried a simple setup without the Lemur stuff...just Cubase and StudioMux? I'd recommend ironing out the simplest setup first. Create a simple MIDI track in Cubase and get sending that to studiomux on your iPad working if you haven't already. Be prepared for wifi to have a fair amount of latency.

There's a lot to unpack there and I'm fuzzy on a few things:

    • Are you're trying to do StudioMux over Wifi? Using "Network Session"
    • Have you tried StudioMux over USB yet?
    • Do you have the latest StudioMux server for MacOS downloaded from the website?
    • Do you have the latest StudioMux app for iOS installed?
    • Does StudioMux have Local Network permissions turned on in iOS Settings?

StudioMux has undergone a huge update in the last few months. The current iOS app won't work with the older server, and vice-versa.

OK, I've done some testing. This is just for basic Lemur - MacOS connections I don't have the Composer Tools Pro thingy. I suggest keeping things very simple like this until you have basic connectivity working, then add pieces as needed.

    1. (Recommended) Bluetooth MIDI
      • No wires to fail and works plenty good for controls and even live playing.
      • No need for StudioMux.
      • Launch Audio MIDI Setup on the Mac. It should be in the Launcher.
      • Go to Window > MIDI Studio and click the Bluetooth icon near the top-right. Click the Advertise button.
      • Go to any iOS app, such as AUM or Audiobus, that supports BLE Midi. For AUM you would go to Settings > Bluetooth MIDI > Central. You should see your Mac and be able to connect to it.
      • Once the connection is established you should see the iPad Bluetooth MIDI connection available in Cubase
    2. (Recommended) iDAM over USB
    3. StudioMux over USB:
      • Make sure the latest server and iOS app are installed. They should both show v5.123 at this time.
      • Start the MacOS Server. You should see the icon in the system tray (or whatever it's called in MacOS).
      • Get a good USB connection to the iPad. I'm suddenly having issues with this, where I never did before. The connection would drop every couple of seconds. I tried reboots, and several other things with no success. I then switched out cables (that work fine on chargers and on the Mac until now) until like magic one finally worked.
      • Fire up StudioMux, wait a long time until the blank screen goes away, and then note the connection icon at the top-right. It should stop spinning, turn brown, and look like two cables hooked together if there's a connection.
      • Check the icon in the Mac System tray. It should show 1 device connected.
      • Set Lemur to send to studiomux.
      • Set Cubasis to receive from studiomux.
    4. (Not Recommended) Network Session over WiFi
      • Start up Lemur and make sure it's set to send to Network Session.
      • On the Mac launch Audio MIDI Setup and then go to Window > MIDI Studio, then MIDI Studio > Open Network MIDI Network setup ...
      • You should see your iPad with a green dot next to it in the Directory.
      • Click the plus button under My Sessions. This will add a session. Enable it. Make sure Enable is checked on the right hand side of the screen also.
      • Click the iPad in the Directory and the the Connect button. You should see it listed in the Participants box on the right-hand side.
      • Set Cubase to receive from Network Session

I've probably overlooked some steps. But hopefully that will get you started.

  • Hi guys, thanks for the replies. I'm doing some tests now with other lightning cables to see if that helps things, I'll put together a more detailed response tomorrow.

  • Bluetooth MIDI is a great way to go IMO.

If midi is all you need, it definitely is.

  • Hi guys, thanks again for the responses. I'm starting a new project today and so I'm going to have to put off my troubleshooting for a month or so.
