Air4 + Scarlett Solo + Apple AV Dongle Static Issue

What up everybody?! Need a little help. Getting static on my vocal recordings into BM3 on IPad Air 4. My set up is Audio technica USB mic plugged into powered USB hub, scarlet solo also pluggged into USB hub and hub is plugged into Apple A V USB-C dongle that has USB/HDMI and Charger port. That’s plugged into Air4 via USB-C. My choices for audio input are Scarlett Solo 1+2, 1 and 2. I’ve tried all 3. I would plug mic directly into the dongle, but then I can hear the music to record to because of no headphone port on Air4’s. Pretty sure it has something to do with the interface because I used this set up with my gen 1 iPad Pro which does have an earphone port and the vocals were still staticky, but less so. Any clue what the issue would be?

Did you try with a regular mic connected into the Scarlett directly connected inte the dongle? To me it sounds like an issue with the USB-mic, not the interface…

  • You shouldn’t be using the scarlet at all if you’re using a usb mic on iOS. It’s an either or thing with audio devices on iOS as unlike Mac you can’t use 2 audio sources/interfaces at once. The usb mic acts as an audio interface, so I would unplug the scarlet and simply use the the AT USB mic.

  • I'm wondering how you are getting the USB mic into the interface - I guess via the mic's inbuilt headphone monitoring output? If so you probably have a ground loop. A usb isolator might help, but really the best thing to do would be to sell the USB mic and buy one with an XLR output.

  • The mic is plugged into the usb hub (4 USB ports) which is then plugged into the USB port on the dongle. The Scarlett is plugged into the hub as well because I need it for the headphone jack. If I plug the usb mic directly into the dongle on an Air4 I have no way of listening to the track I’m recording the vocals on. Maybe the xlr mic is the answer.

  • @king_picadillo But you say you are using the Scarlett audio inputs in your first post. This is the confusing bit as you shouldn't be using these if you are using the USB mic - you should be using the USB mic in the input selection.

Most likely. Then you can enjoy both the audio from iPad and get better quality results in recording vocals. The Scarlett has fantom power so you can get either a decent dynamic or condenser mic these days for pennies.

Good luck, let us hear the results!

As already stated by @ipadbeatmaking , iOS can only use one audio interface at a time. The USB mic is trying to be the second audio interface. You are not seeing it as an audio input because it is not actually connected. I suspect your staticy recordings are coming from the iPad mic(s), possibly mixed with your selection from the Scarlett. The basic rule is that iOS only recognizes the audio interface connected last.

  • @Spud It doesn’t give me the Mic as an input choice, only the Scarlett. After reading everything here, it makes sense in my head now and the solution seems to be that I need a xlr mic to plug into the Scarlett. Thanks to everyone for helping me make sense of this. Wonder if any of the cheap condensors on Amazon are any good, can’t trust the reviews on there. I really didn’t want to buy another piece of gear so hoping I can find something decent on the cheap like @DMfan suggests.
