16n faderbank

I just bought a 16n faderbank from Slate & Ash, mainly to use with my Norns shield, and to control parameters in Ableton, but I’m wondering if anyone has used one in an iOS environment? I’m hoping I’ll be able to assign the faders to various parameters in the new SWAM flute bundle I’m about to grab, but not sure that’ll work (?) Any tips/ideas welcome.

  • Well, I'm sure that you already know this but Lines has an iOS thread that isn't specifically about the 16n but there will, probably, be more people there who have tried it with an Apple product.

Did not know it is made by S&A.

Thanks @ashh , yes, am a regular visitor to the lines forum. A very welcoming environment, folks seem genuinely happy to help/share.

S&A make their own version, but originally it was something Sean Hellfritsch (Cool Maritime), and a couple of others were doing as a DIY/open source project, if I'm not mistaken.

    It's a beautiful thing, either way :)

It truly is a beautiful thing. :)

    I agree about Lines too.

You'll need a USB adapter to connect to your iOS device. The Apple ones that include a power connection port are recommended (Lightning or USB-C, depending on your iDevice). Get the free MIDIWrench app, connect the 16n USB port to the adapter, and MIDIWrench should report the MIDI messages from the faders. The manual says it sends CC#s 32 to 47 on MIDI channel 1. If that works, you can use MIDI mapping in your apps to use those controls.

  • You'll be able to use it with iOS devices if it's class-compliant and doesn't require specific drivers to run, as you can't load bespoke drivers on an iOS device.

I don't know a whole lot about Monome Norns (or the Raspberry Pi derived Norns Shield DIY clone) but I'd assume that it will include the necessary middleware to connect to an iOS device as a class-compliant device. From what you've stated in your original post, it's already doing this when it acts as a MIDI controller in Ableton.

If neither the 16n nor Norns Shield is class-compliant, your other option is to get a converter for the mini MIDI out (looks like a stereo mini-jack) to 5 pin MIDI Din and then use an iOS MIDI interface such as IK's iRig MIDI 2 (you will, of course, need a 5-pin Din MIDI Cable too).

These are €80 but it's worth keeping an eye on eBay as they come up for sale at better prices fairly regularly.

  • Thanks @jonmoore and @uncledave - appreciate your help. @jonmoore I'm about to get a new AI, probably the basic Arturia Audiofuse, which has a 5 pin din port- so I'll hopefully be able to use the 16n with that and my UNO midi USB adapter. Will report back and let you know how I get on :)
