True... the Apple Pencil 2.0 makes a big difference in notation accuracy
and it charges right on the iPad without that stupid lightning adapter that
    keeps getting misplaced.

  • That sounded fantastic; I'd call that more than just a sketch!

Thanks for checking it out and providing encouraging feedback. It means a lot to get a little validation.

  • I made some ambient audio and wondered what some orchestral instruments might sound like added. So, I imported the AUM audio file into 4 staffpad parts staggered but overlapping and added some strings, woodwinds and horns.

You did what now? Can you play audio tracks in Staffpad in synch with the sequenced bits? Because that sounds like witchcraft, and also magnificent. I have notion for music notation, when I need it which isn't very often, but it can't do that and it's a tiny bit fiddly to use..

The instruments sound good, but there are some parts where it sounds like there are glitches in the sound?
0:35, 1:19, 1:59 and at the very end.

Yes. Check out these 2 demos to understand the options to load audio and stretch it to match changes on the tempo track.

Because that sounds like witchcraft, and also magnificent.

The sound engine in Staffpad is amazing. With the last update they also added a strip
of the typical 8 FX. The Plate Reverb gets a lot of use to place the orchestra in a larger room.

All these low volume notation apps are fiddly. I was hoping Staffpad became a standard for
music students to hear their composition exercises. Financially, StaffPad merger with Musescore. Not sure if there's a roadmap to merge or just get some financial backing for
more development or payout for work done to date.

Yes. I need to add volume adjustments to the start and end of every audio clip and I
published too soon. That's why I call them sketches... I don't over labor but use the time
to improve my workflow and discover what works and what to avoid. I'll probably edit
my audio in Neon more carefully to generate start and end ramps so there's no trace of
a volume "click". Then I can use multiple copies and not have to repeat the editing in Staffpad's volume editor.

This is super interesting. I use Notion mainly to transcribe stuff I'm supposed to learn, but being able to combine audio with "midi" or notation in this situation would be supernice.

1.2 GB though - my pad is almost full already. I'm at 662MB with Notion.

Also regarding the fiddlyness: What would you say the frustration/joy ratio is with Staffpad given your experience with it? Notion works; but I do have to throw the ipad across the room regularily with it.

I was using Staffpad on a 2918 256GB iPad that was overflowing with purchases.

I recently went all in... an iPad Pro with a TB of storage and the newer Apple Pencil 2. Big difference in all respects.

My Staffpad enjoyment went from mild frustration over note recognition from hand drawing to joy.

    Wow @McD

    Wow.

I like the “blips.” Very space-like, almost as if some computer is rebooting.

This is amazing. It’s truly beautiful. The flow, everything. Which specific instruments did you use?

And the Apple Pencil 2…really makes that difference?

This is one of my favorite pieces I’ve discovered on the forum.

    "Blips" are the bomb.

    Let's see:
Some Dark/Bassy Woodwinds: Alto Flute, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon
    CineBrass "2 French Horns"
    Spitfire Cellos
and 4 instances of the audio file made in AUM

And the Apple Pencil 2…really makes that difference?

Seems to be much more accurate for handwriting detection of notes... significantly and the best feature is the auto-recharging by leaving it magnetically attached to the iPad. I got
the Smart Keyboard too and it provides a touch pad and Key codes for a lot of menu choices.
My favorite being "t" for the tricky "Add Text" pop-up which is used for dynamics and tempo changes.

This is one of my favorite pieces I’ve discovered on the forum.

You're too kind but I'll take it and use the energy to make something new.

  • I really liked the View from Saturn, haunting stuff, probably overlooked because it’s in this ‘composite’ thread.
I’ll try and refrain from schoolboy jokes about the view from Uranus…
    Whups didn’t manage !

Thanks for the listen. The composite thread probably reduces contact but I think Staffpad is a bit of a one off for most music producers due to it's input method and cost. There's a forum for Staffpad creators and I get even less of a response there. The StaffPad Facebook group is the most active with lots of shared work and support questions.

Missed your “View” track. It once again shows your rapid evolution. You should post these as creations as well. Since these are composed and not improvised I would pay some attention to your phrasing, maybe. Could be fewer run on or linked phrases, perhaps? More air is what I’m saying.

The overlapping phrases here was definitely intentional... I was flirting with something akin to "ambient orchestra". I think it needs the NASA video of Saturn and not the Uranus videos from the dark web.
Did anyone see that new anal scene in "The Boys"? There are somethings you can never "unsee" like the time that head exploded in David Cronenberg's "Scanners". It taught me to be careful about just watching any movie without reading reviews... so I skipped the "Human Centipede" but "The Boys" caught me off guard.

Butterfly a work in progress... but the progress lately has been pretty slow. I labeled it Butterfly Updates because there was a previous version that might be in SoundCloud so I created a new name:

More elisions since it's a cheap way to add complexity and I am nothing if not cheap.

Very Audrey Hepburn. Needs some flutes, I think.

Thanks for checking it out. Audrey Hepburn as in "Breakfast at Tiffany" where she does the dance with the Beatnicks? She studied ballet and started out as a chorus girl.

Funny you should ask for flutes... the first thing I added on re-visiting this project was a piccolo part. It was not like a Butterfly so I passed the part over to some bell sounding choices: Glockenspiel and Celeste. The Celeste got buried in the mix and I discovered that the new Compressor app could really pull up the volume beyond what "fff" could do in the notation. So, I have started to add compressor a lot to pull instruments forward.

But there are some flutes and alto flutes in there but doubled with other instruments so they just become a part of the tone of the violins or the bell sounds.

I could strip out and expose the flutes but I probably won't... what I might do is take that
4 bar theme and make it a 16 bar or 32 bar theme. I might need to transpose 4 or 8 bar sections to add a nice chord progression behind the longer theme. Transposing sections in
Staffpad is really easy but it transposes chromatically and doesn't respect the key signature.
Still, it's easy to remove the extra #'s or b's that get added outside the key signature.

  • I'm scared that I'm about to buy it on the off chance one of my non Apple pencils actually works.

  • Reminded me of classic Disney :) The bass at 2:15 right before it ends sounds interesting; like a duet almost.

  • Agreed with @JudasZimmerman. Started out washing the dishes then ended up in a scene from “Fantasia”. Very lush and inviting

I upgraded to a new iPad with Apple Pencil 2. On the 2017 iPad my pencil was always out of juice when I had the urge and the little adapter dongle kept getting misplaced. Pencil 2 rests on the top of the iPad Pro with a magnetic charging port connection. I does tend to fall off a couple times a week but it's always ready to work.

Let me listen to that spot: Oh yes... the fun (and lazy) way to get more material on the score is to "lasso" or select the notes from one part (Harp in this case) and paste it into another instrument and shift it to fit the target (down an octave). The target here was the ContraBasses (classical for upright bass). To keep the harp attack I used Pizzicato (plucked like the Jazz bassists play).

There's enough material here to create a much linger piece. The horn melodic fragment is begging for a much longer run before it returns to the butterfly motifs. By using the glockenspiel and harp I was thinking of some of the Harry Potter themes John Williams devised for Hogwarts and Harry's Owl.

Yes... "Fantasia" music comes entirely from the Classical Orchestra catalog with some editing to condense "The Rite of Spring". Film composers create pastiches of these amazing musical
works. Trying to get at these feelings is why I like to sketch ideas in StaffPad. Synths are wonderful but sonically this a really emotional canvas and palette.

  • Second time I’ve listened to Butterfly_Updated… like a break of fresh air… excellent.

Thinking more along the line of Logic Crayon or similar.

  • Staffpad only codes for the Apple Pencil. So don’t buyvStaffpad if you don’t want to buy an Apple Pencil.

Sometimes, I make StaffPad library comparison videos:

  • Hi McD,
    Magnificent!
The sound you created is very cinematic.
I can imagine this musical scape as the main backdraft to an incredible revelation.
    You are a master!!!
    I love this recording.

You, sir, have exquisite taste. By showing up fashionably late and breathing life back into the party.
This thread may be used by anyone to drop a StaffPad Joint on the proceedings. Come on… all 4 of you
That jumped in and bought a pencil.

I just got a free drawing app and really loved the pencil.
