-=Westward=-

So I spent the whole evening tonight trying to think of a cool visual to go with this track, and I am giving up! I had an animated cowboy on a horse as the background in a VS session, with all this stuff going when I thought “This is too much!” And decided to scrap the whole thing.

This should be about the music, I said to myself. Not everything needs fancy moving visual effects on a screen!

This will also be the first thing I’ve uploaded to my SoundCloud page in months, so please forgive me if I forget how to post the link.

A country-western inspired piece!

How it was made:

In GarageBand, I used the native Acoustic guitar and half strum/half picked out a guitar track and added a bass line. Screen recorded both parts, then brought it into AudioShare where I trimmed it down to a perfect loop.

From there, I imported said loop into Cubasis 3 where I added several GeoShred tracks, and one Electric Vintage EP. The GeoShred instruments I used were the GeoSWAM violin and Cello, as well as Geoshred’s very own “Shred Lead” which the feedback sounds amazing on, especially with some Blackhole reverb!

Each Geo-Part was 100% improvised from start to finish. I tried to keep it interesting by doing a few little embellishments, more noticeable in the last half.

At the end, I made a sound in GeoShred that I’d never heard before and was really happy to have captured it!

I was actually going to try and shorten the piece for the visuals, but since that idea has been scrapped, you get the full uncut version!

  • I suggest you read The Cremation Of Sam McGee over this one. Do you know it? By Robert Service.

Oddly, I’m working on a cowboy song too. One I wrote 50 yrs ago. Just wrote the finishing lyrics today.

That is some gorgeous sounding stuff, Ed. Very nicely done.

Incidentally, I was not aware Dolby was offering mastering services online (probably using machine learning) on Soundcloud. That’s a nice premium upgrade service and something Apple should offer for all users of GarageBand and Logic Pro.

  • Great job Ed! :)

A classic poem. The part about Sam smiling back at him because he was finally warm always stuck with me.

I saw that. I was like “Oh cool!” And started doing it before I realized I was going to have to pay for it. Scrambled to back out of it when I saw that “Purchase” button lol. It’s probability great and everything, but I really need to watch my spending now with gas and everything else going sky high lately.

Thanks Ulf! I appreciate you having a listen!

  • Here’s a screen capture of the session in CB3 before adding the Vintage Electric EP part… which now that I’m listening again, I think I like it better without!

    What do you guys think?

  • Strangely, I prefer the first, tho the second has more clarity.

Thanks for having another listen. The EP part was added last minute. Might go back and remix to push it back a little and let the original Shred Lead have the front spot.

  • Lovely track @Edward_Alexander . Much preferred the second version, the first sounded like it was clipping to me (think that is the term), very muddy! The feedback on the GS Shred Lead is a great sound.

Thanks Tony, yeah I’m with you. The second post is actually the first version (the one without the EP). That’s what I’m assuming you’re referring to as the “second version”?

  • Nice piece.

Gentle and soothing comes to mind.

    Sounds good on my headphones.

I've only listened to the soundcloud version not the YouTube version yet.

I hope you get a chance to give the YT version a spin. I feel like the violins were a little loud on the SoundCloud version. On the YT version, you can hear a lot better, the Shred lead parts, which IMO sound amazing with its feedback effect.

  • Assumption correct Edward👍

  • Okay, I got a chance to listen to them both back to back.

The Soundcloud version is over compressed overall but I prefer it out of the two.
    It sounds much fuller.

I can hear the compression kick in on the Soundcloud version which is
most probably the reason why clipping and the mix sounding muddy
    was mentioned.

Ease back on the master bus compression,
use a longer attack time and shorter release
and a slightly higher threshold and it would be good to go.

The compression sounds more suitable for
a dance track rather than what we're listening to.

Both versions sound good, the soundcloud version is simply my preference.
I tend to like complex and layered sounding musics.

Thank you so much for taking the time to give both a listen!

I’ll have a play around with some compression settings and see where it goes.

If you like complex layers, you’re sure to like my newest upload “Heavy Hitter” (another new track where I’m practicing the art of mixing and compressing)
