  • This appears to be more of an evolutionary, rather than a revolutionary update. Polishing up of the current system front end for users, and a lot of new stuff on the back end for developers.

  • No new hardware announced.

  • Lots of features I don't want... Fab.

  • Quote from the full transcript over @ Macrumors.com :

11:28 am Apps can reach out and talk to extensions, apps can project UI.

11:28 am Building on the same sandbox model.

11:27 am Apps are in sandboxes, can access own data but not other apps without your permission.

11:27 am Apps from the App Store can extend the system, offer services to other apps.

    11:27 am Extensibility.

11:27 am 4,000 new developer APIs

11:26 am Craig is back on stage.

Not sure of i understand that correctly, but are they implieing that Apps can offer files to other Apps in The Future? Like i will be able to have 1 Sampler App, that contains all Instrument wave files i have, and can grant access to those to every other sampling App?

  • According to Apple..

"Now you have the freedom to work with the document of your choice on the device of your choice. Because with iCloud Drive, you can safely store all your presentations, spreadsheets, PDFs, images, and any other kind of document in iCloud and access them from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC."

If audio files are considered docs, then it would seem the answer is yes.

  • Cool, thanks for the update. I was somehow unaware this was going on now. While it's good news that iOS8 will "work" on iPad2, I'm afraid that device's days are numbered (well, at least as a supported, functioning device). There was a pretty heavy debate as to whether iOS7 should even be installed on an iPad2 (the 7.1 update optimized it a bit).

  • Of course the most interesting conversation on this topic happens here. Why did I even check out other sites first...

  • Looking forward to sniffing out swift.

I write largely javascript for a living and objective-c's lack of the following (which both Swift and JS have) has always kinda intimidated and befuddled me:

Inferred types make code cleaner and less prone to mistakes, while modules eliminate headers and provide namespaces. Memory is managed automatically, and you don’t even need to type semi-colons.

    Though I like a good semi-colon; semi-colons are great.

  • iCloud Drive also looks interesting. Seems like it's aiming to be a Dropbox killer.

  • "iPad with Retina display"

iPad3 or iPad 4? or both of them?

Exactly the first question I had when I saw the slide... iPad 3 was originally the "new iPad" while the 4 was "iPad with Retina display".

It would be very disappointing if the iPad 2 got the update while the 3 didn't.

Hahaha!!! I'm very interested in YOUR thoughts on all of these announcements! :-)

..And the subscription upgrade price to 20GB isn't bad either. Aproximately $12/year.

  • As a simple end user question i would like to ask those with knowledge, is there a chance that any of this can make IAA work more stable?

I think it's very interesting. I'm sitting here with Chris talking about it.

I'd say that there's a good chance @yaknepper. In my mind, the biggest problem is the bugs (ie apps not closing properly in iOS when used with IAA). A new version means that there is a good chance the old bugs still hanging around since iOS7 could have been addressed. It's no guarantee, but I'd say there's a good chance. :-)

  • @Audiojunkie
    Cool, thanks!
I will put my trust in the good people who develop theese things!

  • I would think devs heads would be exploding with all this new stuff. Over 4,000 new APIs and a new coding language on top of it? I'm sure all these new features/changes make some things easier by removing limitations but it sure seems like a lot to digest.

  • The new language may not be all the appealing to existing objective-c developers. It's an add on to existing tech, meant to ease development, not a replacement.

And "4000 new APIs" is likely 92% marketing speak. :)

  • Makes sense. Agreed. :-)

Oh, to be a fly on that wall.

  • Just to confirm: Audiobus doesn't work on iOS8 :D
    Ktxbai :)

iCloud Drive sounds nice, but the rest...I don't know if that deserves changing the name from 7.1.1 to version 8.
Well, I'm waiting for compatibilities issues...mainly about musical apps.

  • edited June 2014

they announced a lot of stuff:
    better store/search in store
no more 1000 photos limit in camera role
    siri starts getting useful
    cheaper iCloud
    better keyboard/3rd party keyboards/quick type
    airdrop just works
i wonder what can be done with extensions and dokumentsharing for audio
    widgets inside notification center
    cloud kit
    home kit
    a new nerd language
but still no love for audio - its still all 16/48 without an audio interface cough maybe thats the thing to announce with new hardware? one more thing itunes does 24/96 now? it really is about time ...

hm, no xcode for ipad - interesting

  • document of your choice on the device of your choice, but no mention of App of your choice. I am not optimistic we'll be able to capture in MTDAW and mix in Auria without file copies. And relying on iCloud for multi-GB file migrations per project just does not grab me one bit.

The benefits of inferred types are not universally agreed upon. No compile time type checking for one. And you never get 100% coverage in test, users always do something you did not think of. And find those paths where inferred typing breaks.

    Yet, show me.

Seriously? This is a huge change.

  • Apple hasn't been wasting time. iOS 8 looks like a major leap in many areas. Even as just an end user, I found the new stuff for developers really compelling. Can't wait for the fall.

  • edited June 2014

I think the biggest change this year was that Apple didn't use the WWDC for any hardware announcements or anything like that. They're focussing only on developers and only on software. Much appreciated.

Well, I tried to be quite carefully from my ignorance about the "core" of new iOS, so I'm glad with your comments. :)
