iOS8: Extensibility API

edited June 2014 in General App Discussion

Developers can further customize the user experience with iOS extensions, including new sharing options, custom photo filters, custom actions and document APIs. (From Apple press release)

And from Endgadget:

...just revealed what could be a seismic shift in the iOS world: third party apps will soon be able talk to each other.

and

Apps can also select a default storage location that's accessible by other apps -- it's not exactly a traditional file browser but it sounds close.

Are there any developers out there that want to pie in the sky this for us?

Please keep in mind that there's probably some sort of NDA in place that doesn't allow developers to talk about this or something.

  • Ah right. Thanks, @sebastian.

This smells like a big deal to me. Any non developers want to speculate then? We can set some unreasonably high expectations without any sort of rational or informed input! Good times!

There is nothing saying that we can't come up with novel use cases based on the information in the presentation (which was also streamed to non-developers).

I would say this bodes well for apps like Audiocopy & Audioshare, as they could truly become integrated hubs for our digital audio, midi files, soundfonts etc.

  • Another nice thing is the 3rd party cloud storage support available when using the new iCloud drive API. This means that any app incorporating it will automatically receive access to Dropbox, Onedrive, Box etc. without any extra overhead.

  • I didn't realize that iCloud Drive integrated with those other services. Even cooler.

The NDA is much weaker than it was:

"I am not a lawyer, but if I am reading this correctly, it means that beta version of the operating systems and SDKs are still under NDA, but Apple allows developers to discuss new APIs and features that have been introduced at WWDC in public. That should cover pretty much all the new stuff in iOS 8, Yosemite and the Developer Tools."

  • To make it short: this is the end of struggling without a filesystem on ios, file system will be in the cloud of choice.

  • Looks like we might also be able to have a local shared file system as well. Well, more like a scenario where a single app like audioshare could hold all of the source files (vs duplicating them each time with copy and paste in and out).

  • Hallelujah...

  • Looks like apple are on the road to ios osx integration with close to desktop file management, 11" ipad version and all...;)

Just get your lightning beats on and no droid will ever stop you from sinking all yer cash in this mess, haha

  • I have no idea if that's even close to a practical reality. Since apple essentially lifted the NDA for items covered during the WWDC keynote perhaps @j_liljedahl or @sebastian could shed some light on this?

  • From my conversations with Michael it seems like this is not really usable for music apps. It's just good if you've got some sort of sharing workflow within your app.

  • Sounds like Apple are aiming for Sharepoint on iOS...
