Yeah, the story of Modstep's instability is kind of a myth. It hosted AUs when there were only, like, eight of them? Mostly it was IAA apps that it tried to accommodate, and that's where the problems lay. But it had a great sampler, a very versatile additive synth, automatable CCs, loads of drumkits, TONS of midi templates to interface with hardware, and to this day the most intuitive midi roll and clip-launching on the platform. I don't think any app, even LK, has come as close to emulating Ableton on iOS.
Modstep definitely had some quirks, most bafflingly that there was NO UNDO. It had autosave and you could only revert to the version you liked by reloading a file from the buffer, but you had to guess, Was it the take from 253 seconds ago? Or 316 seconds ago?? In the end, it was never an all-round solution for me. It was pretty quick to get things up and running, but AUM evolved, and it was easier.
I'm absolutely holding out hope for Modstep 2.
I was excited when I found it could be downloaded and run on the Mac but on there unfortunately it crashes as soon as you try to start the transport so does not even do the sequencing part. The plugin hosting side of StudioMux has so far been reliable so here's hoping that code finds its way back into the next Modstep incarnation.
I loved ModStep as a dedicated MIDI sequencer back in the day, but LK and Helium and Atom2 have totally captured my attention when I reach for a sequencer these days.
Modstep was very powerful and feature rich. Surprisingly so for it’s time and imo beyond anything at that point.
But I found the UI extremely confusing. I’d take me to “relearn” it every time. In my initial complaints about LK, a very similar app, i always compared it to Modstep in not finding your way around.
It’s sort of a shame when apps like this are abandoned. So much work lost, I bet the imaginando team could have made good use of Modstep source code to build LK. And yes, the drum sequencer was great. And the piano roll and editors were very advanced and feature rich.
No it's not.
When there was nothing else liked it. Wouldn’t touch it these days because there are much better options around for my use.
I can’t recall showstopper issues, only that I was glad to replace it, and generally all apps from this dev. I wouldn’t recommend them generally, they tend to over promise and under deliver.
Got me excited so I tried it again but bugfest for me on the windows side.
I’m sorry, are we here for argument or mere contradiction? 😜
I wouldn't have you not believe it couldn't have been any other way. Good day sir.
Just checking - you installed the new server and the new app on the iOS side? I haven't done much testing on the Windows side, but on MacOS it's much better.
From what I have seen in the Studiomux forum, there are a number of issues related to (and I don't know what this means) something about Windows iTunes and driver installation. There was a recent post over there about what is needed to get it working right.
I did update the app and installed the new server. My ipad showed up in the vst fine and was audible for a few seconds, then my host crashed. Now even after reboot the ipad is not an option to select and it just shows some ‘buggy text’ (exactly what I forget) in the rollout. May give it another go later out of masochism.
Us kidz all be rockin' them AUv3's now.
Never really got on with Sequence 2. Not sure why.
"I came here for an argument. You're just contradicting me!"
"No I'm not!"
Now you're just being argumentative!
Can’t mix time signatures in Xequence
I take this back, it does work on the Mac. If I don't have my Focusrite interface turned on then for some reason iOS apps running on there either don't start their transports or in the case of ModStep they crash. There must be some audio device enumeration that goes on which fails if one of the devices is missing.
Anyway, you can use ModStep as a sequencer on the M1 Mac in the same way as you can on iOS as far as my limited playing this evening shows me. Still no plugin loading but the internal synth/drums works. Don't right click as that does crash the app. You can MIDI out to your favourite DAW or Drambo or something like Kushview Element.
