Is there a way to control Garage Band transport controls via a controller?

hello! I was wondering if there was a way to control garage bands transport, e.g record/undo via a MIDI foot switch?

I want to basically use it a bit like a looper / song writing tool and it’d be great to have some quick controls so that I didn’t have to fiddle about on the iPad.

Thanks,
Alex

  • I don't think there's any way to map midi messages to the transport controls in GarageBand. If you have enough control over your foot switch you may be able to program in MMC commands to it, and it may work. Most foot controllers can't handle thought though.

  • Cool thanks - I suppose using something like AUM would be the alternative for a looper ?

There are lots of outstanding options for looping on iOS. Loopy HD, Group the Loop, QuantiLoop, and others. Choosing what fits you best can be a challenge. Youtube videos can be helpful.

Loopy Pro will the long awaited successor to Loopy HD. It's in beta test now, but is going to be amazing. That said, all the ones I listed above are excellent. All can work very flexibly with a foot controller.

  • GarageBand has a lot of good keyboard shortcuts that work with a Bluetooth or USB keyboard (the typing kind, not the MIDI music kind). It’s not MIDI, but it’s better than nothing.

    Worth a look!

Also, there are the (often forgotten) accessibility switch control on iOS that can map e.g. a MIDI note to any touch event on screen.
If all else fails, the accessibility switches will support transport control by MIDI in GB/iOS.

I use this with GB and other apps, works well. Was it you who made the initial tutorial here on AB forum? It was great 😊

To control recipes, we can use dedicated physical controller or even an iPhone as a remote via BT.

Initially I learned to recipes how to swipe AUM transport. But some nice midi actions are coming very soon. Everything can be done including for GB.

  • @Janosax Yep, it was me 😇
I'm also using accessibility switches with that small Bluetooth game controller to operate my navigation app when on the motorcycle (scrolling, zooming and centering the map) 😉

I did not know that GarageBand has keyboard shortcut support, that is a useful tidbit of info: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/garageband-ipad/chs88452c59a/ipados

I was also going to suggest the accessibility touch event MIDI thing. I had a play once and got it working pretty well but I seem to recall realising it was either on or off across the system (or something along those lines) which put me off the idea. I think in iOS 15 you can now set accessibility options per app so it may be worth taking another look at. A tip I remember is to lay out little bits of paper with numbers on them to map out the touch order if you want to record something more complicated.

  • This is all great thanks!
