Recording with internal I pad mic…..sensitivity

Dear audiobussers

I’m in a situation where l only have access to iPad mic for recording vocals in garage band.
Getting so much background noise.
I think in BM3 get less background noise.
Suggestions welcome…thanks…

  • Record in a quite place, get the microphone directly pointing at your mouth, close, but not so close that you get proximity effect, sing with enough volume, and noise gate or delete all the parts that you don't have the vocal going.

Note that if you are compressing the vocal it will get the noise up in the parts where you sing quiet or there is no voice, hence the importance of noise gate.

You will never get pristine results with it, so maybe embrace the lofi quality of it.

  • You can also use brusfri by klevgrand. It is an amazing tool

Do you have the auto gain on? If so, turn it off and set your gain lower. That will help.

There is no proximity effect with omni-directional mics as built into iDevices ;)

Crucial: set the audio properties to „measurement mode“. This will disable auto-gain and remove the low cut filter from the input.
You have to set gain manually and it takes a couple of tries to find the best setting.
(you‘ll be rewarded with a 60dB signal to noise ratio, which is quite impressive for such tiny capsules, MEM types btw)

  • Brusfri cleans it up pretty nicely, I did some guitar recordings with the iPad mic and it helped clean it up pretty well. Obviously a good mic would be much better but it was good enough

Just asking. Where do you find these "Audio Properties"? I don't see them in Settings on my iPad 6 with iPadOS 15.1. Is it a iPhone-only thing, or is it inside GarageBand?

I had no idea, there is however a distortion when you are to close, I guess it's related to air, my advice stands however, try to record as near as you can.

  • Thank you guys.
Telefunky——-where is ‘measurement mode’? iPad settings or GB settings?

A pop-shield helps against plosive noises, diy with a nylon above some frame ;)

@uncledave Garageband seems to be set to mm automatically: there‘s a regular gain fader for the internal mic.
In AUM you find it under Settings, Mic & Speaker mm on/off
The exact location may vary with apps, but it‘s an input property, usually under preferences or settings and it only applies to the internal mic/headset input, and not interface (USB) audio.

OK, so it's controlled by the app using the mic, however it may choose, or not. Thanks.

  • How do you record using the internal iPad mic, pls? I use Cubasis as my DAW and would like to record the iPad mic into it.

  • You have to disconnect your audio interface - it hides the internal mic... :o
