Something about bip

edited June 2014 in General App Discussion

I was playing around with bip just now - trying to get it figured out - and under the loop indicator top left (on iPhone) there is a circular button that will cause a new control to pop up in the BIG circle to the left (around the PLAY button) - if you hold that circular button you can choose one of the arrows that pop up in the BIG circle and do something I don't know, because a second or two of trying just that caused bip to start stuttering and stuck in some crazy short loop; I couldn't turn it off with any of the app controls, so I shut it down. I wonder what I did...

  • I haven't used bip a ton because I find it a mess to navigate, but I recall there being an acknowledged issue with either AudioCopy or open in not working right, and it has not been updated yet to fix it. Nice dev and actually a cool little sampler (sort of like a cheap indie version of iMaschine in some ways), but it needs some fixes and maybe a better manual/demo.

  • I agree - it looks interesting enough that I'd like to see some improvement in the UI.

  • Agreed again....impenetrable UI's usually cause me to give up sooner rather than later

Brain those three circle icons that pop up inside the big circle are the three recording modes. From left to right the first (incomplete) circle is loop record mode, middle is stop/play and the circle on the right is infinite (open ended) record mode. Loop mode is nice because it captures a sample accurate recording of one loop cycle of how many bars are set. I bet you recorded a very short loop in infinite mode which is what you heard.

I agree that bip is little quirky but no more so than many other apps. Read the manual and spend some time with it and hopefully a light will come on for you like it did for me.

  • One good way to see what bip does is create a new song from scratch and don't load one of the preset sounds into each track. This requires you to load samples into the circles that you play on the very bottom screen.

As previously mentioned the pasteboard is currently broken but you can use "open in" to bring in your own samples just fine. I have heard people complain about bip crashing but in my experience this only happens if you try to import a long loop file or a file that is not 16 or 24 bit, 44.1 k. Bip is really made for shorter one-shot samples.

@brain i think the first thing to do is have a read of the manual. some people get the app without the manual and some people need some explanation. the ui/ux has been carefully designed for very fast and fluid use of the app but of coarse one needs to know how to use it first. i am still in the process of making some detailed tutorials to help users explore and discover all the features. also, as @yowza points out, starting with a new song is a good way to slowly discover how everything works. as for the stuttering, i'll see if i can reproduce what you did. as for copy/paste...there are some limitations and in need of an update.

  • @yowza - Thanks for the "Open In" tip, that is good workaround (for now).

@soh_la - There is a manual, and it does try to explain what all the buttons do, but I just find that if you aren't a regular user of the app, there are no labels for anything, and I tend to forget which screens you need to be on. The interface is unique and colorful, but there are panels with dots on them that could be pattern, song, or kit selection, and it is necessarily clear to a new user.

Anyway, I don't expect massive overhauls to the way the app works, but if you ever do work on an update, perhaps just making the interface a little easier to follow and fixing the ACP thing. Thanks for your comments and for the app!

It's surely simply a matter of my unfamiliarity with how bip works, but it was that same unfamiliarity that compelled me to bring it up. Thanks for all the info.
