SD Card for use with 14" Apple M1 MacBook Pro? Recommendations please.
Sooo, my work just got me a new 14" MacBookPro which I'm very happy about.
I want to use it for some music stuff outside of work and am hoping to make use of the SD card slot for my samples and music library.
They laptop supports UHS-II which has transfer speeds of 300 mb/s
However, UHS-I SD cards are waay cheaper but only have transfer speeds of 170 mb/s
Can I get away with a UHS-I SD card or should I pay up for the extra speed?
What would the difference be like experientially?

If youre just using it as storage and not streaming from it USH-1 should be fine.
If you are just looking to expand storage and it’s gonna be there pretty permanently, they stopped selling these a while ago, but you might be able to find one still on eBay or something:

There also these if you don’t mind the 95/55 read write speeds:

I don’t personally see the appeal of SD cards. They just feel so slow to me. And they always got so hot, does that still happen to modern SD cards?
Why not go with a Thunderbolt external drive? Only downside is that it is external so could be a hassle to have a dongle attached if you aren’t doing your music session at a desk or table.
I recently got a couple of old Samsung T3 external SSD drives. They are tiny. And transfers are so fast on Mac and iPad Pro
The appeal is that they are small and inexpensive and good ones are reasonably fast for read access without being too expensive.
The appeal for me is that even though they stick out from the side a bit, it’s far more practical using the laptop on your lap with an SD card rather than an external SSD.
I went with a 256GB170MB card to test using one with the samples from IK group buy which ended up filling the card completely. So far works fine.
It does stick out more than I expected but in use it doesn’t get in my way.
They’re cheap enough that it’s not a mistake to get the slower one first. It will always be useful for other stuff if I need a bigger or faster one. Also SD cards aren’t the most reliable storage media in the world. They’re not designed for long term storage, so I’ll swap it out in a year or two anyway.
Got it, for sure price and small size are reasons to go with SD cards.
I’ve just been so impressed with the the tiny external SSD options available now… the speed makes such a difference to me
I’m sure we will start getting loads of options for near-flush SD cards (using the smaller cards in a holder as you used to be able to get when apple last put SD cards in laptops).
Also SSDs/USB-c thumb drives are going to get smaller too.
And wow. The new MacBook Pro’s are amazing. I’ve got the base model 14 and it’s blinking fantastic. :-)
(Just don’t tell my work I mostly use it for Logic. Thanks. )
Thanks for the tips... much appreciated
I agree, speed and increasingly smaller SSD, is the way for me, only trade off is heat, SD cards if absolutely needed, for hardware etc.
If only there was a USB-C port on the lid, so you could permanently gaffer-tape an SSD to thr top!
I ordered a 1TB MacBook. I’d much prefer 2TB, but the price difference is insane.
