Noob Drum Sequencing Question...
As noted: Noob...so please be helpful and not make uninformative comments.
Where is the best app to map new/custom drums kits into? Pretty sure BM2 and/or NanoStudio
But if my goal is to use that kit in a sequencer, not just pads...
What's the best app or strategy to used said kit in a sequencer? DM1, Molten, other options
I'm probablyoverlooking the obvious here but any help is appreciated. Thanks
For assistance purposes I have BM2, NanoStudio, DM1, Molten, FunkBox, iElectribe, bleepBox!, iMPC, Genome, and Cubasis

If you are looking for simple, Molten is a good start, it's cheap simple and ab compatable. Personally I like FL Studio Mobile for this but i'm not sure if it's better or just what i'm used too. I picked up BM2 a while back but havn't played with it too much, I'm sure it must have sequencing.
BM2 does have sequencing and you can add your own samples. Also has palette of other instruments.
Nanostudio definitely has the easiest kit import/export but no planned audiobus compatibility. Great file system and copy/paste support though.
Am I correct that Molten only supports import via iTunes File Sharing? Why can I not remember BM2 having a sequencer for drums or do you map your samples to the keyboard and use that sequencer
NS and BM both have a sequencer (BM pretty much directly ripped off NS' sequencer) but neither have step sequencers. They're full blown midi editors.
@JMSexton You can import via copy/paste with molten too. I just checked it out.. the Bm2 sequencer works like midi instead of steps. It's a little tricky to even get into it.
Edit: I was typing that at the same time as sapcenter was. I mean syrupcore ;-)
Ok thank you very much the nice thing about Molten is the adjustable "division" as the app calls it. NanoStudio is way easy to import, BM2 is just behind it...
Side Note: I really wish they would update iMPC, I love the sound of that thing, but they left so much out when they released it. Next point, there really isn't a stand out drum app on the market. There are some decent one but no top-notch leader. Hopefully that'll change
Cool thank you all I appreciate it!
No probs. You are right though, there are so many drum apps and no top notch standout. Really it just depends on what your project is and personal preference. I'm hoping ToonTrack makes an iOS app, they make the best VSTi drums I've ever heard.
Anyhow, the one real down side of molten is that you can kind of only have one drumbeat to work with at a time. You can kind of fake using pages but it really needs a song mode. Doubt that will happen. I spoke with the dev and he hadn't worked on it in so long that he was having trouble remembering all the features. lol! And that was after he had added audiobus support.
I was always tempted by Jamstix but at the time there was no odd time sig support
Yea well hopefully someone steps up, I think in the interview @DerekBuddemeyer did with "iOS Music & You" Derek touches on this and implies that there maybe some ppl working on some upcoming drum apps but nothing more than that so who knows...
In reality these are the very early stages of iOS Music Production and it can and will only get better (we'll become poorer) from here as more and more of the big names see the movement and jump in (hopefully doing it the right way and creating a quality app, not just to leverage the market for money). Regardless of this though, around here sometimes 3 days feels like 3 years when waiting on an app/update to drop (i.e. Beatmaker 2) as we wait excited as a kid on Christmas...
Sapcenter!
I did ask IK if they were likely to develop a velocity mapped multisampled drum app to complement iGrand Piano and iLectric Piano (they must already have the sample engine code and all the samples they'd need), but they pointedly avoided treating it as a question.
@syrupcore It's a maple syrup thing...
Which do you recommend more iGrand Piano vs iLectric Piano....I know they're two different things but I've gone back and forth on it so want your opinion.
Me? Can't recommend either. I don't use iGrand, CMP Piano is better, although neither is on the bus. I haven't bought iElectric Piano, so I can't recommend it. They claim 20 different electric pianos, but watch the demo and it's really just 3 with different FX, which can be turned on and off anyway.
Thanks for the good honest advice!
@syrupcore HA! I love you sapcenter! :-)
@PaulB CMP Piano you say.. I'll check that out. I honestly still use garagebands pianos when i have the urge. I didn't find iGrand to be much better then GB at all so all I have is the demo version of it. Maybe we can convince Steinburg to bring "the grand" to ios... Freaking love that VST piano. So pretty. :-)
CMP sounds sick! Would be awesome if I had a MIDI Capable Device...although I suppose I could use it through Virtual MIDI and use another apps keyboard... @PaulB do you know if that's possible?
Not at the moment. I've not found a Virtual MIDI controller that can play it yet, although CMP Piano does appear in the MIDI output list. I have been able to get Cubasis to play it from a MIDI track, however, and it does play standard MIDI files.
CMP Grand Piano claims only to support CoreAudio and CoreMIDI (not VirtualMIDI). However, I've driven it from SoundPrism, ThumbJam, Arpeggionome, Polychord, Orphion (but had no success with Chordion).
CMP is absolutely magnificent played with SoundPrism as MIDI controller (put the note sustain on). It's just a pity that there's no way to record the audio in CMP (MIDI yes, but not audio) and, even if there were, there's no ACP to get it to anywhere useful. The developer has no immediate plans to get on the bus, unfortunately, but is considering it.
Anyhow.. back to drums. I found out that Derek Buddemeyer made an awesome drum pack for BM2. Made this video of it today. Check it out. :-)
or his video
Thanks for checking it out, Ryan..these are SO easy to use...anyone with even a small amount of experience can start making pro sounding tracks right away. It can be literally as simple or complex as you want it to be....I actually use these on my album I'm recording right now...lol
I've only had a few minutes to play with them but the sounds are amazing def easy to link up and make some nice beats...and I'm no pro! Nice job Derek!
Wow, that's really impressive!
I bought Derek`s drum samples and MIDI drum parts....Amazing stuff ! Thanks Derek !
I checked out the samples today, they are awesome. Really compliments BM2. Also there are many other loops and for various instruments. Nice work Derek. I think the cost of purchasing is like $8. Well worth it and some. There are also packs for Nanostudio and various instrument loops.
Anyone have the link to these kits
Thanks.
@DerekBuddemeyer There probably should be a new thread for your packs with some links. Everyone with BM2 and Nanostudio should know about this.
Just a note...anyone who has my custom kit for BM2....please download this replacement file for the keyboard sampler...this groups the hihat s together so they cut off when another variation is triggered....thanks to Dexter Tragic for helping me out with this... https://www.dropbox.com/s/hd4xs4f38u75wls/DB StudioPop.bmk2
Hey awesome, I just thought BM2 couldn't do that. Thanks again Derek :-)
