Looking for a AUv3 drum machine synth to get close to the SDS-V sound from Garageband
Hi,
I like the sound of the Simmons SDS-V drumkit from Garageband, is there a AUv3 drum machine to use in AUM that comes very close to its sound?
I should be an analog (synth) drum machine or at least partly analog, not (only) samples, as the SDS-V was also analog.
Can DrumComputer or FAC Drumkit get really close to the SDS-V sound? Absolute accuracy is not needed, but for example the classic toms from the SDS-V are instantly recognizable and should sound like it. Is there a somewhat 95% or so accurate preset available in these or other AUv3 apps? I am not that good with programming these sounds from scratch, so if anybody has made these already, that would be great!
Many thanks!

What prevents you from just using the one in GarageBand? I’m no AUM expert, but surely there must be some way to reroute the audio from GarageBand back into AUM?
I should have written that in the initial description, I would like to use a sequencer like Rozeta Rhythm to send MIDI to the drum machine (or in case of DrumComputer, the build in sequencer is pretty cool already), I don't know if that is even possible with Garageband in AUM, that is why I am looking for a AUv3 drum machine app that can do this.
It’s really easy to dial in that Tom sound with Hammerhead. Took me about three minutes. I didn’t try any of the other kit pieces, but I imagine the would be similarly easy. The basic synth components are there.
I’m totally sure FAC Drumkit can do it too, and among the factory presets are a number of hits that seemed reasonably close. Learning curve is steeper than Hammerhead if you don’t find presets you like though.
GarageBand can’t output to AUM or any other app without workarounds involving a loop back capable interface or possibly something like SonoBus.
[edit] Yes, SonoBus can work for this if one doesn’t mind the setup, latency, and app switching.
Thanks for the replies, choosing from these different drum apps without some expert advice is frustrating.
I did not know about Hammerhead. Bram Bos has also Ruismaker, this is also an analog synth drummachine. I do not have experience with either Hammerhead or Ruismaker, for my usecase, which one would you say is better for me to try to get close to the sounds I want?
Hammerhead has built-in sounds, user sample import, and a drum synth. I didn't find any built-in sounds that seemed like what you're after. The drum synth is pretty simple and direct. It has three parts, oscillator, noise, and resonator. it's very easy to get the hang of these controls even without knowing what you're doing. If you're afraid to experiment then it may not be a great choice. But if you're up for putting in a little effort, I think you'll be rewarded. At any rate, there's no way Hammerhead will go into the bin of unused apps even if it doesn't work out for this.
FAC Drumkit already has some sounds that seem to me like they're really close to what you want. It's a powerful drum synth engine that IMO can do just about anything. But it has a steeper learning curve.
It's a tossup. With Hammerhead you should be able to dial in what you want. With FAC you may be able to find what you want already.
Sorry, there's no turnkey solution. Let's face it, no one in their right mind really wants to sound like the 80's do they? 😜 😂
(just kidding ... kinda ... ha ha ... ✌🏼)
You can also just record one track in GarageBand, set length 8, 16, 32 bars. Export file to audioshare, then use in file player in AUM. As long as you only have one track in GB that is all you will have on the exported loop.
Thanks again, looks like Hammerhead will be on sale this black friday, that is what I will start with.
Good choice! 🤙
