MIDI control to switch to prev/next preset?

Is there any such thing as a host or auv3 synth that would allow switching to next or previous preset with midi?

Thanks!

  • Preset setting via midi varies from app to app. Some respond to Program Change messages, some don't.

AUM and Audiobus are two hosts that provide this for any app using any midi message. Not all apps expose their presets to the host, so in those cases you need to save them as presets in the host. In AUM you'll find this under MIDI control. In Audiobus it's under MIDI learn. AUM and Audiobus manuals both describe the process pretty well.

In both there's not really a next preset / previous preset action, instead you pick which preset you want to select with each midi message.

  • Yes, you’ll need to be able to send Program Change messages in most cases (some apps may be able to use CC messages?). I use AUM and Camelot Pro for live playing and they both work flawlessly.

On GR-16 you can map the up and down buttons so you could use it to change "presets" (actually patterns) up and down.

There is also a method to map a touch of the screen to midi with accessibility, but I've never used it and I don't know if it still works.

  • mozaic has a nice midi to program change script. For next and previous program changes.
You could then make presets for different apps. Does save lots of time.
Combine this with a mozaic midi channel switcher.

But in the end the app needs to support program changes.

Some plug-ins let you map next and previous buttons. Next and previous program aren’t standard midi commands . BUT if the synth supports program change, you could write a simple Mozaic or StreamByter script that imitates next/previous program. The script would go to the first program and have next and previous buttons . By keeping track of what the current program number is, it would send the current number plus one for next and current minus one for previous. (Remembering to wrap around if you try to go past 0 or 127.)
