Chiptune / MIDI composing app? (Doom)
Hello,
I recently got into the original Doom and love its soundtrack, which is often described as MIDI music. To me it sounds like chiptune, is it the same genre? Anyway, I am looking for an app that can do this type of music. Anything cool out there?

Hello! Doom music is MIDI based (pure note data) so its synthesis method back in a day depended on soundcard that you had. It is hard to know what sound you are after, because i.e. Yamaha OPL chips & Roland MT-32 doesn't sound alike at all. Just like its modern emulations that you probably use.
About chiptune, if you use OPL as sound source I think you can say it is chiptune (sniper bullet crushing my window in 3..2..1...), if you use sth else it won't have gritty synth aesthetics of chiptune.
Methods? Use any DAW to compose & some instrument plugins to get sounds that you are interested in. For OPL stuff check these:
https://www.discodsp.com/opl/
https://github.com/jpcima/ADLplug
Both are very capable instruments that emulate OPL characteristics almost perfectly.
If these are not solutions that You are after, maybe other community members can be more resourceful.
Cheers
Pixitracker and Pixitracker 1 Bit may be worth a look.
OPL from DiscoDSP emulates the Yamaha OPL chip, unsurprisingly.
@Samu is the resident chiptune wizard, he’ll probably have more to say.
As far as I know the Doom midi-soundtrack was composed using the SC-55 SoundCanvas.
But yeah as some mentiond it also supports OPL2 (FM synthesis) and Midi.
On the Mac Doom used QuickTime-Midi which used a lisenced GM sample kit from Roland based on the SoundCanvas.
Closest and most CPU efficient way to get that ‘sound’ is to use SunVox, Deflemask or OPL.
The Doom Midi files are easy to find on the web and can serve as good starting points
When it comes to replicating the sounds some patch creation might be needed.
