Beathawk vs. SampleTank and other instrumental sample sources
Hey, thanks to this forum, I just got Beathawk if for no other reason than as a source for good instrumental samples to play with keys. Like what I hear so far, and like the Church Organ.
So how does Beathawk compare overall for the sound value compared to other apps that offer instrumental samples to play, such as SampleTank, BeatMaker 3? And I suppose Cubasis 3, to name a few I have.
Thanks.

@joegrant413 I personally prefer Beathawk. The sample packs are supremely diverse, if you are into that, and UVI is known for their high quality sample libraries.
Its also a standalone almost-DAW, with song construction tools, that exports tracks as stems.
The piano roll sequencer aside from midi notes also has what amounts to p-locks for 33 sample CC parameters, (portamento, effect control etc etc) including empty assignables.
Also ive found the dev rep is very responsive
My humble opinion, hopefully some forum experts will add their analysis
Thanks. The sample don't have to be superlative. If an instrument matters that much, I'd look around for a separate app. If sample can be reliably good or high quality, and they are just a few bucks, that'd be great.
Beathawk also seems to play nice with AUM. If I can reliably save a few channels with different sounds loaded up to respond to my keyboard, that'd be nice. From a brief experiment yesterday, that seems to be the case. I know it's not the primary use case for Beathawk, but max nix.
Beathawk is a dope sample source and it’s Auv3, sampletank has great sounds with the expansions, but it’s IAA only. You could use Audiolayer to sample sampletank, that’s what I do with BM3. Beatmaker 3 is more of a DAW with a sound store that has good packs, but you can use it to import packs from wherever.
Beathawk definitely has some great sounds.
But before you spend ££ on lots of IAPs it might be worth spending a little time trying out some of the many free soundfonts that are out there using the extremely good value Soundfonts app (which is also AUv3).
Yep. On another thread here today, I'm asking about Soundfonts. I haven't spend much time lately BS-16i and have a big fat iPad mini storage to fill
Korg Module is another good option.
Also love Beathawk. Vast selection. New expansions drop pretty regularly, and UVI has fairly regular sales. Sale going on now, in fact.
You also might wanna look at AudioLayer. I'll import exs format libraries as well as other formats.
They arent perfect copies, and they lose some info of them (especially if youre converting nki to exs), but 80% of it is there.
Love Beathawk but lately my favorite has been Thumbjam. I know it's only IAA but so very musical!
PureSynthPlatinum.
Another app I almost forget about.... Korg iM1.
I don't know offhand what the underlying tech is. But all the sounds are pretty good, the navigation to the instruments is excellent, the library of instrument sounds is almost exhaustive, and it appears to behave well in AUM.
I doubt the tones are sampled, or could hold their own against the best apps replicating any sound. But I'm gonna play around with it AUM next. See if I can line up a few iM1 with different tones and see if they hold state, etc.
Thx
And, yes, I have Thumbjam. Very oldy but great. I haven't checked it out well in as a source for a few AUM instruments.
I've found that the strings and ensemble packs in Beathawk are
more than good enough for putting arrangements together.
For one of my current templates I use four instances of Beathawk
as multitimbral sound sources each one dedicated to a sound pack.
It works rather well I must say.
Here's a piece from when I first started exploring
string sounds on iOS using both iSymphonic and Beathawk.
My go to apps for AUv3 sampled instruments are
(I'd add Synthmaster One and Digitalism but they're more synths, than sampled instruments)
Free alternatives would be
1. Piano book
2. World Synth
I use Thumbjam when playing my Artiphon. Same with Animoog for iPhone.
Initially I was worried about the quality of sampled sounds but I reached a point where I'm okay with 70% of the sound I'm looking for. Accepting the fact that I can't fully get exactly the image I have in mind allowed me to focus and work with sounds I currently have, and find creative ways to use them effectively.
Of course, it all depends on the music you're doing. I don't do much cinematic or ambient music, so for my pop/rock/country/EDM/Trap/afrobeat styles, I'm pretty much good.
Since I'm a Gadget user, I love iM1 and Module and Electribe Wave. Of course Module and Electribe Wave are AUv3.
When producing in NS2, I always use Beathawk to produce loops and phrases to use in Slate.
What's your favorite IAP from Module? I keep saying the Triton IAP is crazy good but then again, I haven't purchased much from Module.
The KaPro IAPs. I forgot the names off hand, but once home I can get you those names.
-Monumental Choir Dreams
-Orchestral Dreams
I got the Ivory keyboard module and really like it.
Awesome, thanks. I'll look into them. Had the choir dreams, so I guess Orchestral Dreams is the next one on my list.
Hope the Drambo exploration is going well. I'm thinking of switching up my iOS workflow next year but haven't yet decided on what path I'll take.
Dude, I haven't done any music since August, except I recently started working on a new piece. 😂 Just got a creative block I guess lol.
It happens. When the moment is right, inspiration rushes in like a wave.
No joke.
May-August was that rush.
