[help] Glam/Hair metal tones (nembrini)

edited November 2021 in General App Discussion

Hello all,

I recently bought the MRH810 V2 LEAD SERIES GUITAR AMPLIFIER for ios, and I'm really satisfied with it so far (has that heavy Metallica sound).

After listening to MadeofWax's jam, I was wondering if the amp they were using (Nembrini BG Extasy) could give me the range of tones for that genre (from the rockers to the power ballads), or if I would be better served by a different amp.

The MRH159 BROWN SOUND GUITAR AMPLIFIER sounds like it could handle the rockers but maybe not the power ballads. Then there's also the accoustic stuff like Tesla's Love Song and GNR's Patience. Maybe I should be getting multiple amps, but I don't know which ones =)

Thanks!
-Alex

  • The 8180 Monster Tube is based on a Peavey 5150, an amp created in 1992 as a signature model for Eddie Van Halen. Early 90s hair metal is slightly different, but it may be similar enough for your tastes.

Nembrini's "Black" pedal is a clone of the RAT2 distortion pedal, which I associate with late 80s dirty, funky, hair metal-adjacent music.

Very nice Glam/Hair metal tone - burnt sienna? Sorry, couldn't resist LOL:

  • THU covers a range of these tones too, the preset names give you some clues, e.g. Skid Row in BHS LA RIVER, Van Halen, Motley Crue and RATT in BHS SOLD, Paul Gilbert, RATT, Zakk Wylde in BHS METLX.

I love the Mrh810. Even though it’s based on a jcm800, I really don’t hear an obvious 80s tone there. Especially the clean channel, it’s more like a vintage jmp/jtm late 60s early 70s sound. The clean goes to edge of breakup really really early and you get that fuzzy thuddy clean sound that reminds me of Hendrix low gain Plexi. Anyway the amp genetics of jtm/jcm/jmp are all quite similar but I don’t get the 80s vibe whatsoever from mrh810. Perhaps on the lead channel it will get you much closer.

BG Ecstasy is your best bet, because it has more gain on tap on channel 3, quintessential mid-gain sound on channel 2, a wonderful clean channel for ballads, a vintage/modern mode, and even a low gain Plexi mode via toggle.

MRH159 is all big thick tapestry of smooth distortion, nary a clean sound available. More late 70s Metal and 90s to me.

BST100 could work for you too, both for clean and dirty.

And the Peavey 8180 might actually be your best fit. Both the high gain and the clean channel have the right 80s sound. Needs the bass dialed down.

Remember the sound you’re looking for is not just about the amp, you need to use a Chorus effect, among others, and generally you’re looking for a shimmery metallic sound on your cleans for 80s. BG Extasy, BST100, 8180 are your best amps for both clean and high gain.

  • Thanks for the detailed responses everyone!

Looks like as far as Nembrini, it's down to either BST100, BG Ecstasy or 8180 Monster Tube. Looking at THU overloud too.

    the bass dialed down.

For sure look at Overloud as an all in one solution. The preset banks for each rig they sell will get you the tone you want very fast.

The rigs to look at are BHS Sold, BHS Ace, BHS MetlX, LA River, among many many others.
