Performance Problems iPad2
Beside other problems this is the most annoying one. As soon as I start Drumjam and Thumbjam it seems to be impossible to run both at the same time. Same when I play around with Nlog, the performance is very bad and I got a lot of scratching noises down to complete breakdown of the app.
Anyone can confirm this?

Nlog as an effect for me crashes the audio on my ipad mini(same specs as ipad 2). I also run into audio problems with synths into loopy on my ipad mini. Even with all other apps closed and a reboot I'm getting pretty mixed results with my hardware. I never expected to run a ton of stuff but having one synth into loopy glitching out a disappointing. Hopefully things will be ironed out. I love audiobus and plan on saving up for an ipad 4 to take full advantage of it.
Just running DrumJam and ThumbJam with no other apps running in the background? Does it only bog down when you have DrumJam actually in playback of loops?
Yes, no other apps in the background running. Beside this, if I have TJ running with a loop it´s almost impossible to have DJ running as well. It´s a complete sound-mess.
Something is strange about that - as I stated in another thread "On jailbroken ios 5.1 ipad2 I am happily able to run Drumjam, Sunriser (at 128 samples latency), Jamup xt, Thumbjam, Audiobus, Atomic Browser, System Activity Monitor, and the App Store thingy. No crackles or problems, just pure fun. Wow indeed!".
I have disabled all ios BS like geolocation, mail, and notifications etc - maybe all that junk has a lot of overhead. Streamline! It might help.
I have no desire to run 5 apps at once, anyway. I'm happy just to lay down a single track at a time, into MT-DAW, without the ol' pasteboard nightmares that killed enthusiasm and obliged me to use a hardware-based Tascam 8-Track. Audiobus eliminated that headache, and I'm thrilled.
I'm going to try your streamline tips and sample rate on sunrizer mojojunk.m
@litebritedeath82 -
you commented on a previous post I made about having audio mess problems..
now things work fine for me >
I am using iPad2 ios 5.1.1 and I normally streamline things anyway but didn't think to reset the iPad (just shutdown and wait a little while before restarting).. check you have no apps running in the background - and disable your wifi connection (disable anything to give the CPU a breather). If any of your apps have a background audio switch - turn it off because it is not needed in audiobus compatible apps. Finally, try opening your music apps in a different order - for example.. open audiobus last and then connect everything.
I know how stupid, nonsensical or maybe even obvious this may seem but try it if you haven't already?
Thanks for the tips. Ill try things I had not thought of like wifi and background notifications being turned off. I audiobus even with my issues.
you definitely want to rock Airplane Mode, under any circumstance, while recording (for obvious reasions)! it's always my first move.
Please note that if you're using Airplane mode, Audiobus can't update the database of compatible apps. Which means if you use a cable based way to add new apps to the iDevice, then Audiobus won't have a chance to update its database, therefore not automatically showing newly compatible apps in the pop-overs.
Once the new apps have been started while Audiobus was running in the background, this should be a non-issue. Apps will appear in the lists immediately.
Here's my observation. While playing NLog in audiobus after first few notes I hear the built in mic in the background through the distortion. Could it be possible that the built in mic is being activated somehow? I' m also using Mt Daw as output. Can someone test this for verification?
@mgmg4871, are you running JamUp in the background, while it is not connected to Audiobus? JamUp while disconnected will take input from the mic, which may explain what you're hearing.
No Michael, just running sunrizer, nlog and mt daw. I'm beginning to suspect mt daw as the culprit. Thanks.
Mojofunk: your suggestions really helped me out...didn't stop to think how much of that stuff I never really use my iPad for (mail, location, yada, yada) was messing with my Audiobus capabilities...thanks!!!!
I would very much like to "streamline" as some of you have mentioned. I've disabled everything I can think of, but there could be things I'm missing. Would anyone care to post a list of everything that can be done to minimize impact on Audiobus and music apps from the iOs background clutter? Thank you in advance.
i don't know if somebody mentioned that before:if you are running in low latency trouble (256 samples forced by audiobus) on your iPad 2 ,start Nlog (well,if you own it) BEFORE you start anything else no matter if you want to use Nlog or not.Just start and put it in the background. It will force any following app to use a latency buffer from 512.in this case i was able to run iPolysix into MDAW without any problems on my old iPad 2 and it was not possible to run all three (Poly,Audiobus,MDAW)before.
Does unplugging and reinserting the headphone jack still reset the buffer size? It used to.
No, the headphone jack has nothing to do with buffer size.
The next version of Audiobus will have this, so you guys don't have to come up with these workarounds:
You've done it now. That panel is going to be stuffed full of option selectors in no time. Lol
We're going to try to prevent that from happening. But Hardware buffer size was something that really just had to be there, simply because users would otherwise start to find workarounds which are sub-optimal anyway.
whoopee, thats great news.Although i have an iPad 4 now (works like a charm) and i bought it especially for audiobus and Auria
Colour schemes. We NEED colour schemes... and furry dice. Make it happen.
@paulB: you're funny - and you are probably right.... :-) The castle is ready to enter!
That's a nice feature but I think there are performance issues that can't be solved by increasing the buffer size. Today I ran Neosoul keys and Animoog on Audiobus 2 on an ipad air, os 7.0.3 (I know there are issues with ios 7 but it came with that version). stutters and crackles even in the highest buffer size setting. When I run the two apps simultaneously without Audiobus the ipad seem to just handle these 2 admittedly CPU hungry apps just fine (no crackles, no pops, no stutter). Is it possible that Audiobus sucks a lot of precious CPU just to do what it does (which is great, no critique there…)?
Neosoul and Animoog are possibly the two most resource hungry apps. Neosoul can be made to crackle on its own on iPad Air if you try hard enough. I don't know the exact figures but in this case I'd say the instruments and not the mixer is to blame, audiobus may be that straw that breaks camel's back.
May be stating the obvious here but free memory space can also be an issue, I recall reading somewhere that cubasis, for example, needs 3+ gb free in order to function fully. Culling the obsolete apps, sound files & projects to find space is a painful experience but my funds aren't stretching to an iPad 4 in the foreseeable future. That said my ipad2 hasn't been such a happy bunny since switching from os 6 > 7, numerous glitches that never reared their sonic heads before updating, even the trusty MTDaw now occasionally misplaces a beat when recording Not a massive problem whilst multitracking but it has made my iPad less dependable for running multiple apps whilst playing live.
( I blame korg gadget, with its multiple synths & shiny interface, tempting me away from sticking with os 6 )
