Beatmaker 3 or Cubasis 2 for recreational use?
Hi,
since its BF I caught that shopping virus, ended with dozens ios apps
I use iPad for my little recreational sound experiments, mostly in AUM.
Regarding DAWs/sequencers I have Nanostudio 2, which is very nice, but absence of audio manipulation makes it less desirable.
There are Beatmaker 3 and Cubasis 2 on sale currently, so Im thinking which would suit my needs better.
So I kinda need a DAW to make a recording here and there, mostly from AUM (though I know AUM could record), and arranging. Mostly electronic music, multitrack recording, audio and MIDI...
I know many will say "buy both" or "buy cubasis 3" but I dont want to loose myself in options so I would prefer one of those.
Oppinions are welcome.
Best,
V

Did you look at the videos? It is a toss-up (for me) between the two... BM3 has Ableton Link (Start/Stop)... Cubasis 2 has AuMidifx Direct recording, which is nice. And Cubasis has strong support...
This is kind of a hard one
I have both and have been on and off with them for a long time.
At the moment I would recommend BM3
Cubasis will have the advantage recording AU midi, but with BM3 you can do it to using workarounds (Midi Tools or Midi Router - or just commit to audio)
But the biggest advantage that made me focus on BM3 at the moment is regarding recording trigger. I can set it to just record when it detects audio-in, making less of a hassle chopping stuff.
Sometimes I record to multiple pads (so I can experiment with structures), and sometimes directly to an audio track (mainly with drones and long found sounds)
Cubasis 2 is unlikely to be supported on future iOS versions so I’m inclined towards BM3 for that reason alone.
But even beyond that, I quite like Beatmaker! Definitely would appreciate a few tweaks (ability to record AU MIDI to the piano roll, easier MIDI mapping for common controls like track volume, etc.) but all in all it’s a fantastic environment.
I've seen plenty of youtube videos with mostly beatmakers using Beatmaker
and somehow I thought of it as an MPC type daw (superior beat sampler with everything else in role of serving it).
But if it has most of Cubasis 2 features than it could be it.
@Vlad3: they are so different. Some buy BM3 for its sampler alone…which is still the best on iOS. There is a fair amount of consensus about the greatness of the sampler. Some don’t love it as a DAW (and some do).
I assume I'll have to buy both to judge in the end
Start with BM3, dont expext MIDI learn to auv3 parameters directly, but resampling tracks and auv3 is easy, timestretching, a lot of fun with sequencing editing and clip launching, 8 aux sends (if I good remember only post fader), no auto-freezing-track (but possible to do resampling manually in realtime), super sampler, nice browser, filters and fx nice , very stable. I was able to make finished small projects. But limitations are there also.
I bought both BM3 and Cubasis 3 several months ago. I find cubasis 3 much easier and more intuitive to use.
There were a number of times I was just staring at bm3 wondering what button to push to get into what mode.
For beat making, I prefer Koala over everything else. So easy to get started song sketching and staying in the flow.
BM3 is feature packed and the sounds are high quality. But for me it was too much of a beast to stick with.
My recommendation? Get Cubasis 3 with Koala Sampler AUv3 unlock.
The main appeal of Beatmaker 3 is the MPC workflow, and the insane sampler. But with Cubasis, the synchronization with AUM is insane.
Koala Sampler has always been on my top 5 app list. But with the AUv3 update, it has become a
behemoth. If you feel the need to do heavy sampling, Koala Sampler would be great at it.
Oh, and they both work on iPhone and Android.
BeatMaker does a lot of things Koala (which I love) doesn't... such as time stretching while also doing realtime high-quality live repitching from MIDI or the internal keyboard. It also supports velocity layering and a lot more.
Agreed. That’s one of the reasons why I keep the application on my iPad. That said, I’m always questioning 🤨. Is it worth keeping an application I hardly use for the chance that I might eventually use it?
Yeah, this is a weird turn of events. 2 years ago, I’d argue for the importance of Beatmaker 3. Maybe I need to revisit a lot more DAWs than my regular workflow before I make a notable conclusion.
I certainly wouldn't keep it around if I weren't going to use it -- high-quality realtime pitch-shifting is something I find pretty valuable. I don't know of anything on iOS that does that (while maintaining the correct duration).
I'd argue for keeping Beatmaker 3 on your iPad.
Earlier this year I was using an MPC Renaissance for production
and the BM3/iPad/Launchpad X combination trounced it in every way except the rep.
I resampled all of the original samples into
the iPad and the track sounded much better for it.
Koala is one of the apps that drew me in from hardware samplers (mpc, blackbox, circuit) to ios ecosystem, and its still much beloved.
Bought BM3 and will have to invest some time in learning it (harder than investing 9$), but the winter is coming...
If you’ve got the time, this may help you decide whether to dive into BM3:
True, the discount is very nice. I may have to look into a lot more DAWs soon.
Thanks for the perspective. I’ll have to rethink my workflow @Gravitas @espiegel123 to appreciate Beatmaker 3.
