Need Help from macOS GarageBand Users… Missing Alchemy

edited November 2021 in General App Discussion

I have a very particular problem I hope GarageBand users can help me out on. Somehow the Alchemy synth has disappeared from my macOS version of the software (it was either overwritten by another piece of software I installed or it may have been deleted by me by mistake).

How can I restore Alchemy? Where does that functionality appear in the app so I can bring it back from a Time Machine backup? Or must I delete GarageBand and reinstall it completely from the desktop App Store? And if I reinstall from App Store, will I lose all of my presets, all of my third party plugins, etc? Plus, I have a whole lot of patches from older versions of GarageBand which no longer appear in newer versions of GB…

I’m completely flummoxed by this problem.

I see it in the App Store - did you try to reinstall it from there?

I would think that reinstalling it would restore Alchemy, and if you’ve lost anything you can always do the restore.

If I were to delete GarageBand, would I not also be deleting or "breaking" all of my third party plug-ins and sounds which are no longer part of the latest version of GarageBand?

What I have done is go to "GarageBand > Sound Library > Reinstall Sound Library" and that did not reinstall Alchemy. I'm guessing because Alchemy is not a downloadable part of GarageBand, it is built in.

Anyone who has a functioning version of GarageBand for macOS, please look at this attached image. What tipped me off was that a preset called "70's Classic Synth Bass" was missing from Synthesizer > Bass > 70s Classic Synth Bass. And now I suspect every patch that used to be under Alchemy is now gone.

  • I’m not seeing 70s Classic Bass in my Garage Band (10.4.4 ) either. I’m not seeing that preset in Logic Pro either but it is a preset within Alchemy in Logic. There are other Alchemy appearing/sounding presets in GB that also appear in Logic such as Classic Funk Synth Bass and Ethereal Bells. Hope that helps.

Hmm. It's a preset only within Alchemy itself, but not listed in the Logic presets. That's interesting.
