Experiences with ipad to ipad migration?

I‘m gonna pickup my new M1 ipad today but i have no backup from my current one.The SSD in my macbook is too small and i don‘t own imazing to make backups on external HDs.

There is also the possibility to connect both ipads with USB cable and mirror everything from old to new one and i want to give this a try.Anyone experiences with it?Is it a solid solution or do apps start to act strange or something like that?

  • If you can’t make a local backup to your MacBook, iCloud backup is the way to go. Both of those methods are the official Apple solutions to this problem, and they work well.

You won’t need as much iCloud storage as you’re using on the ipad, as the apps don’t count, they get reinstalled from the App Store.

So once your old iPad has completed the iCloud backup, you’re good to go.

When you set up the new ipad, you just tell it to restore from the backup of your old one, and your data, settings etc will be restored. Barring apps that are no longer in the App Store, or which aren’t compatible, your new iPad will start from being pretty much identical to your old one.

I’ve migrated several iPhones and an iPad this way, and it’s reliable, though it will take quite a long time to reinstall all the apps etc.

  • Even without the apps i have quite a bit of files on my ipad.I would need to delete some AND make space in my cloud as well (and reupload later then). Not as troublefree as i would like it but thanks for the input.

I believe Apple now allows something like 3 weeks of unlimited temporary iCloud for transitioning to a new device. Not sure how to access this, but it could be a solution, provided you have good internet. There's probably an Apple help page on migration.

Note that you need to allow significant time for the restore on the new device. Once it's downloaded the backup (fairly quick), the process continues, downloading and installing all the apps. I did this back when I was on DSL, and it was an overnight process.

  • i figured i do have enough space on my ssd so i use the classic way now

  • You should be able to do a direct transfer from you old iPad to the new one via bluetooth/wireless using the "Quick Start" option. It should transfer all your personal data and settings, and queue all your apps to be downloaded and installed.

  • All went smooth it seems but i was able to use the most conservative way now….restored from a computer backup 😁

  • Just did my iPad transfer using the quick start. I’m 95% satisfied.

Wait, why 95? Well, while all the documents and apps transferred, some legacy apps that are no longer available can’t be downloaded. Specifically, Oval Synth.

Small bummer, although I have the app on my iPhone and Android phone. Overall, I’m thankful that I spent minimal time in setting up the new device.
