crack and pops with Animoog z
I try Animoog z on iPad 9 by directly connecting the lightning cable to my mac mini (late 2012 quad i7) running 10.15.7. I have cracks and pop when I use with Ableton 11.
I tried several solutions, like for example changing buffer size which I currently reset to 512 samples without success.
I don't have a lot of experience using audio from the iPad and understand that there can be a lot of different reasons for this problem. In view of the settings, perhaps you have ideas to solve this? Thanks…
Comments
What buffer size are you using in Ableton(the same 512 as in your iPad?)? Do you have the same problems with the Animoog audio when your iPad isn’t connected to your Mac ?
Have you tried other iPad synths with the same setup?
Does this happen with no other apps running?
Buffer size in Ableton is 512 (same for Animoog). No problem with headphones directly connected to the iPad. I don't have other synths apps yet on the iPad.
Could you post a short example? Possibly the buffer sizes or sample rates being different.
Actually, Animoog is the only one apps running.
here is a short example.
Buffer sizes and sample rates have the same settings: buffer > 512; Sample rate 44,1k
Have you tried another synth to see if this is a general issue or specific to Animoog?
I don't have any other synths apps yet, but it doesn't make any cracks anymore, I don't know why, because I haven't changed anything…
Welcome to making electronic music! Where the rules are made up and the troubleshooting is as consistent as my ability to trust a fart after a night of taco bell.
For real tho... the pops/cracks in your audio seem to be happening at a consistent beat/rate and not related to the attack of any one note. It also doesn't seem to be a CPU overload issue. There's a ton of little things that this could be, even down to just some oil or dirt or loose connection with your cables. Or maybe even a cosmic ray hit your iPad or computer the wrong way and just momentarily messed it up never to be repeated (no, seriously that happens:
)
9 times out of 10 you just restart your device and shit starts working again
This is what i think too, hope it won't happen again… thanks for your help!
You’re not spending enough time being creative if you’re not spending at least half that time troubleshooting
If needing to test again, you can pick up Viking Synth or Audiokit Synth One for free.
Hi, today cracks and pops have started again. I tested with Viking Synth (Thanks McM) but it's exactly the same as with Animoog. Can you tell me if purchasing an IK Multimedia iRig Pro Duo I / O can solve these problems?
why not use the headphone output and plug it into my mixer with jack adapters? Any cons?
I see that there are also lightning adapters with USB and headphone jacks output, would that work?
You might just want to record the audio on the iPad and transfer the audio files over to your Mac mini.
Are you sure that you have IDAM set up correctly? You might need to change some setting in the Audio Midi Setup app.

If it doesn't necessarily have to be live input, it's just so much more hassle free. Airdrop is your friend.
Maybe your dsp is overloaded with too many processes.
Your 'cracks n pops pattern' sounds familiar, and I'm not sure if this'll work, but it may be worth a shot (I'm mostly a Windows user, so used to this kind of stuff) -
Disconnect all unnecessary wired/wireless devices first, force-close all unnecessary applications, and reboot both machines.
Put your iPad and maybe your Mac in Airplane mode.
Try again.
And yup, I'll third the Airdrop advice. It's much easier, faster, and I still knock myself for ignoring it for so long.
Thanks espiegel123!
I believe that was the solution, because I hadn't configured it correctly. I used the method described in this video and for now I have no more cracks and pops!
