To be frank we’re still in the stone ages where it comes to advertising. YouTube is using the interruptive model which inherits from television, it’s established, but really, the industry shouldn’t stop there – there’s probably so many better ways than what already exists.

That's a very good point, yes, I am sure they could come up with a different / better model. Do you have any concrete thoughts on what though, apart from banners etc?

I’d rather just see all the advertising at the start as a prerequisite to watching the video. It would make it more palatable if it was relevant content, but as I said above, YouTube is clueless when it comes to targeting advertising so that I would actually be interested in whatever products are being advertised.

The interruptions are definitely the most annoying form though, and I find it puzzling that they are sometimes at the end of videos - surely that’s a disincentive to watch them?

Many years ago when I was doing my MSc I looked (not very hard) at alternative models for advertising in the future of interactive media. Firstly I didn’t really know what constituted the future of interactive media, second I didn’t really look deeply into video advertising, my main knowledge of advertising is from the print magazine world. However, I did go down a line of thought back then which suggested product placement could be much more advanced given multi layer video. I now disagree with myself back then. Any time I’ve seen any evidence of actual product placement (and there isn’t a lot, it’s almost like some fictional thing that people talk about but hardly ever appears, like subliminal advertising) the products are basically only American products and therefore don’t actually exist as actual products that anyone can recognise let alone buy. That alone is a significant impediment – interruptive advertising can at least be localised and personalised, product placement makes this nearly impossible.

I use ad blockers on both PC and iPad, and never see Youtube ads.

If you are really compelled to watch ads to support a certain channel, you can always whitelist the channel; however content creators often have more direct ways to provide support (such as Patreon, etc.) that obviate the need to sit through mind-numbing commercials.

Which blockers? Youtube ads are pretty elusive for me.

    YouTube didn’t exist then though.

I skip all ads and I assume people are always skipping the ads in my videos as well. Ad blockers here on all my devices. I'm a terrible person, I know.

I just passed 1 million views on my channel. When I look back at the tiny amount of money I made (before I recently turned off monetization on all my videos) I don't know how people can expect that platform to be a viable source of income.

Where does it show the total views on your channel? I need to look at my count.

    Never mind I see it… 47K hmmph

I've been paying for YouTube Premium for years now and couldn't be happier. It's less than $14 (tax included) per month and offers a great deal of value to me as YouTube is pretty much all I watch. I tried subscribing to Netflix and Amazon Prime before at a similar monthly price point and had to cancel both because I hardly ever use them compared to YouTube.

I find it rather curious that people are hesitant to subscribe to YouTube Premium to avoid ads while at the same time don't mind paying monthly for Netflix or Prime. YouTube Premium is light-years ahead in terms of value and content versatility as opposed to Netflix and Prime.

    Agreed!
YouTube premium is my fav subscription
I watch a freaking lot of YT and its so enjoyable now

I tend to skip around videos a lot and start / quit so much that the subscription is a no brainer for me. Also, I don’t think there is an ad blocker that works on the app and I prefer it way more over the website. Oh and Youtube music is nice while working.

The demo period for YouTube Pro is now three months. I'm in the middle of my demo period and I'm pretty certain I won't be going back to free access. I haven't bothered with YouTube Music or any of the exclusive programming, but the advertising was becoming so obtrusive I was finding it hard to pay attention to any of the content I was watching.

This. I have been on Premium for only about a year now, maybe less, and when the other day I had to use YouTube on another, non-premium account, I was shocked by the number, and harshness, of the ads. Easy to get used to living without them.

(BTW, something similar happened to me with Instagram. I was off for a few months, then went back, and i found the ads so annoying that I came right off again. 🤷)

  • I pay for YT premium. It’s worth it.

  • I’ve been successfully clicking on random ads (mostly female underwear) on FB marketplace to confuse the algos.
I already have duck duck go as my engine on all devices and it works well.

You tube is harder to confuse though, what you watch and search for gets thrown back at ya.
So, in the end, no matter what you do, if part of your life is online they will dial in on you eventually.

Dom = male musician who loves female underwear.

As for ad blockers, yes they do work for most part but I feel guilty when I get the ‘turn off adblocker’ pop ups as I know many people rely on it for revenue. I don’t care about the Amazons, more like small you tuber businesses that live in a volatile economical environment.

  • Just checking the timeline…
YT becomes popular because of the free content - so they decide to monetise it - creating incentive for bunch of wannabes - so I should pay them both to keep the wannabe dream alive?
I don’t feel bad for blocking anything I can. Algorithm only ‘nails’ it when it shows clips I already watched… I’m ok with that… few subs, rare likes, mostly dislikes when it’s oblivious that you’re in it for wrong reasons… simple toolset for simple decisions :)

    • Brave browser on Windows blocks Youtube ads without any extra addons, I switched to that a while back (was previously using Chrome with Ublock Origin)
    • For iOS I'm using Wipr (be sure to enable Wipr extra, and then add Youtube to its list)

in firefox (and android firefox): ublock. you can also add additional filter lists very easily. before getting the ipad I wasn't even aware that youtube had ads in the middle of the video...

on the ipad I installed adblock plus yesterday, let's see how it goes. website ads are gone, still have to check youtube tonight.

I'm surprised how painfully dumb the YouTube recommendations algorithms are. They seem to largely fall into one of three categories:

    1) You viewed a review of the new Renault Clio, so here's 67 more reviews of the exact same car
    2) You viewed something, so here's something similar but more extreme (especially if the topic is politics)
    3) We have zero idea at this point, so here are 13 videos that you have already viewed to the end, why not watch them again

I'm aware it's probably more complex than that but whatever they do, the end result looks decidedly primitive in the age of neuroscience and nanotechnology. 🤷

  • Another vote for YT premium, it's a 2 for one with Google/YouTube Music. Also, yay for cheaper legacy plans. 😄

I think there is one thing we got the wrong way around.

youtube might not select ads for different target groups but it is rather the companies that are creating the adverts that select a desired target audience. this would explain why we keep seeing absolute garbage ads. because the producers of this garbage are paying good money to youtube/alphabet so that their shit ads are shown to us specifically.

  • YouTube must be on to me or something. I'm now getting 2min+ ads that are unskippable.
I can't say they're imbedded as they occur across any video on any subject as randomly as any other 15-30sec spot.

youre lucky. I sometimes get a 10min infomercial about earwax.
the only way to get around it is to refresh the page.

  • You can flush it out with warm water too.

  • earwax or female underwear? not sure which one you are talking about
