Anyone thinking about getting a Steam Deck?
Games aside, it could make for an interesting mobile music platform. That is if the IC shortage ever lets up enough to be able to buy one.

I put my fiver down, I might finally get through the epic indie game collection I’ve amassed through various bundles over the years, and I’ve said for years that I’d get one if they ever got around to making one… I’m not sure how great it’ll be for music, maybe a plugin host, or interesting controller, maybe there’ll be a niche market for that sort of thing?
If it ever comes to brazil, I'm getting it
My game backlog is huge from all those bundles and giveaways.
But considering people are calling it the Nintendo Switch alternative, would love to see music stuff in it. Like Gadget in Switch.
The five is down. Not sure about music, I like sticking to one platform for now…
WTF is a Stream Deck... must Google.
Are there any interesting Steam Library music apps... I know they had "RockSmith" which
acted similar to Guitar Hero but used an electric guitar as input and NOT some plastic toy
controller. The USB guitar cable + Game for a PC cost $80 (as I recall).
I think the required subscription will make it a "no go" for most of us but there will be gamers here:

Still... the killer app makes hardware sales go logarithmic: perfect for primitive drum machines with those log beats.
Yeah, I placed $5 down too. Maybe February, before we get it. Maybe later. #supplychain
Also, not subscription. Whatever games that you own on Steam.
I don't plan on using it for music, have plenty of other options for that.
Hi,
I’m curious about it, mainly for gaming. If anyone gets it & can test one of my all time fave games - Unreal Tournament 2004 - if it runs/how it controls, I’d be v.appreciative!
I didn’t preorder it for a couple of reasons - with handhelds - I like playing while lying on my back on a couch - Not sure if the Steam Deck’s sticks’d be comfortable in that position, also it’s supposed to be relatively heavy. Thus, I’d rather wait & see what others think about how it feels & plays, till I buy.
Also, for those that don’t know, the Nintendo Switch has a light version of Gadget on it, so music making is possible on these sorts of handhelds, but I’d much prefer iPhone/iPad.
Thanks for reading, wishing you all the best! 😺🎸🐬
I'm 100% on board with wanting it, but I have a very strict no pre-order rule for anything video games ever.
I actually loved the steam controller for retro pc games, and something like this would be a game changer for me.
Imagine...
Morrowind, oblivion, daggerfall, deus ex, thief, gothic, system shock 1+2, and numerous other low spec inexpensive but deeply inspiring games could get a second wind on a handheld. These games will probably never see the light of day on the switch, and I never got to finish a lot of them back in the day. I'm all in, but no pre-orders... Not until I know the thing will definitely exist and work, which until it's in the hands of gamers is never a guarantee these days 🤣
It's my favorite too, though 2003 is where it started. 😄 It'll be one of the first things I install.
Also one of my favorite games (that and Total Annihilation) which is not playable on my iMac. I used to play sniper games for hours, in fact we had a little clan thing going way back when. I think I was running a dual Celeron machine at the time, which now that I think of it is ancient. But still that sniper game was and is the best FPS game I've ever played.
BTW my son (who is a big gamer) just said that early indications of this are quite poor. Initial observations of the hardware are that it is substandard for the price point. But he is not able to build a gaming PC because the video card prices are just so out of control (again!) right now.
Yes! UT03 was also v.good too! It started with the 1st Unreal Tournament for me, which in the UK was called just that, but in the US everyone calls it UT99 - It came out around the time of the 1st Matrix movie, & I remember playing it with a mod that slows down time & used bullet time gfx when you get a certain no. of frags - It even had Morpheus saying "You have to let all go Neo...free, your, mind..." whenever it activated, of course slowing down the last 3 words for effect . I enjoy all the Unreal Tournament/Championship games! Also one of my fave all time guns is the Flak cannon
@fprintf Indeed the Sniper rifle is really cool especially on Capture the Flag maps - Facing Worlds was one of my faves back in the day - God knows how many hours I spent playing it! Re whether the Steam Deck will be worth it - I think it could be good, some peeps I've heard talk about it have been impressed, but a lot of the games I want to play on it are games that you can't get on modern systems & may not work with the twin sticks, but we'll see..
@GeorgeL909 Great list of games! I'd love to replay the original Thief, Deus Ex & System Shock2. There may be a chance that System Shock could come to Switch, but again, we'll have to wait and see - the original Quake came out on Switch (plays great!), so you never know!
It's so sad Epic dropped the development on the new Unreal Tournament to focus on Fortnite.
But it's ok... Just gotta fire up the classics... listen to those crunchy voice samples and banging mod-tracker soundtrack
I spent many hours on Thief and Deus Ex on my old Windows desktop, you can still get Thief Gold on gog.com along with a few of the other other classics, they seem to have regular sales as well.
Looks like you might want an android phone!? Just kidding, but you can play Morrowind on android, with daggerfall in the works and there's a real PlayStation 2 emulator dropping December the 4th for deus ex, you can also play half life and mods, the dooms up to doom 3 and mods, and someone is in the process of porting source games over, so I dunno, for retro stuff (that's not explicitly PC) android is the way forward. I guess it's only a matter of time before some genius nerd gets
Unreal Tornament 2004 yessssss!!!!
I sometimes play it to keep my brain sharp, great game.
I always wanted RimWorld to come to the iPad so maybe this is the next best thing.
Steam Deck won't require a subscription. Valve is kinda the opposite of Apple in their outlook (except that they also charge devs 30% to be on their store). This will be very open to putting whatever you want on it. You don't have to go through their store to install anything on it. It's basically a touch screen based Linux computer with a game controller attached. It has a compatibility layer that allows it to run Windows applications (mainly game focused -- I think Windows audio/music apps would be a stretch). It should be able to run Linux based audio apps though it is a bit CPU light and GPU heavy for that task.
I actually own Rocksmith. I find it pretty interesting how bad I am at it. But, I find tablature cumbersome too. I tried to learn lute tablature at one point and it made my brain hurt.
Price point wise I think it does a pretty good job considering the game controller and screen integration. Last week I was forced to get a new motherboard and CPU for my PC because my old MB went into an infinite boot loop cycle that I couldn't fix for anything. I went with the bottom end AMD 5600G and did some testing with Linux and Proton on the APU with the builtin graphics. It was good for 1080p level stuff. The GPU and memory path on the Steam Deck is better than the 5600G and the memory I have, so I think it'll be able to handle most anything at the 720p level of the builtin screen and probably 1080p for external monitors. I wouldn't expect it to be able to do anything much above that and Valve has said themselves that it isn't going to be aimed at VR level stuff.
I looked at getting a new graphics card too -- um, yeah. Prices are nuts and availability is zero. Weird world.
Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm personally intrigued by the audio production possibilities. The CPU/GPU balance is a bit off for music production from what I can tell from the specs, but it still might be interesting.
Anyone ever tried using a game controller for MIDI? I used to make a MIDI controller app that had game controller support and I thought it had some potential. Combined with the touch screen on the Steam Deck, it could make for some fun use cases.
Cancelled my pre-order and bought the OLED Switch instead.
Majority of the PC games I like are already ported (Divinity: OS II, Disco Elysium, Witcher 3, Slay the Spire, Into the Breach, Loop Hero, etc)
So, I decided to put my $5 marker in the line for one of these. I assume some of you will be getting one of these long before I will. I'd really appreciate hearing your impressions when you do get one.
Oh man, so did I… so did I…
