Song Of The Month Club - December 2021
What is the Song of the Month Club?
It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.
The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.
The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.
All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.
We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material
And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine

My entry this month is a collaboration with @JanKun who weaved all the music around my vocals. I supplied him with the finished vocals on a temporary arrangement (just a few chords really), and he wrote all the music around them. The interlocking guitars are particularly beautiful IMO. Lyrics in the spoiler:
In Tennessee the Bryants
Are working on a song
You never see these giants
But their shadow is long
Destiny and fate
Bought them to this place
They were destined to be great
When they first met face to face
He wrote for you
You were writing for him too
He wrote for you
And soon you wrote as two
Boudleaux said to his Felice
This dream is what we’re meant to be
Boudleaux said to his Felice
Honey just you wait and see
To Tennessee from Georgia
The road was hard and long
But then one day a barber
Said his boys needed a song
Destiny and fate
And the Everleys boyish charm
They were destined to be great
When they left that Georgia farm
This is an older one from 2012.
I improvised the music on an iPad using Alchemy Mobile and one or two other synth apps (not sure which ones). I used Auria Pro to record it.
It's longer than usual at nearly 24 minutes. Feel free to just check out parts of it, if you don't have time to listen to the whole thing. I had thought about cutting it down in length before posting it to YouTube, but it seems to hold up (and flow/evolve) well as a longer piece. And it has a meditative quality that could be useful as background music for a full 20-minute meditation session.
The title of the song is Wheel of Life.
It was inspired by the music of Pandit Pran Nath, La Monte Young, Terry Riley, and David Hykes.
I like the intro with the radio/soundfx -- I would have liked some of that sound design to be referenced in other parts of the track too. I don't think the verse vocal is your strongest, I'm wondering whether singing it in a higher key would be beneficial? I think the vocal sounds a little bit hesitant in the lower notes.
The chorus is good, I like the vocal doubling and the musical backing, which isn't in your face but lifts the chorus section nicely. I like a chorus to be 'bigger' than the verses and this achieve that nicely.
Sound wise, I thinks some of the brass competes with the guitar a bit, particularly in the outdo and I struggle to hear the guitar. I'm biased to preferring guitar to brass so that can be filed under 'nitpicking'!
It's really good to see a collaboration too. :-)
Thanks for the listen and the feedback. I might ask @JanKun to have a go at singing the verses - he's a terrific singer with a voice deeper than mine so it might fit his register better.
another shortie for the end of the year..
I always feel that adding just a little ‘edginess’ would for me give your work that little extra. This one somehow reminded me of my bloody valentine (which to me has that edginess I like). Don’t know whether that makes sense.
Maybe that can partly be achieved by letting the introfragments reappear as @klownshed suggests?
“And it has a meditative quality that could be useful as background music for a full 20-minute meditation session.”
Yes indeed. The sounds are beautiful and have a melancholy/hopeful/meditative/evolving quality to me.
Thanks, that's a pretty insightful comment. What I'm aiming for in my music is a blend of beauty and edginess, so it sounds like I'm letting myself be too seduced by prettiness and not allowing enough weirdness in. Something to consider for future releases.
It's a cool sample-based musical collage, with an arresting stop-start groove. What would really make this work even better for me would be if after a stop-start intro the track settled into a really solid and funky groove for a couple of minutes, with a constant beat.
But there's some nicely curated sounds in there with a nice contrast between the horns, voice, and bass. The synth lead is delicious, probably my favourite thing in the track.
Hi, this is my new piece that i released on spotify but i don't know if it so good.
Anyone can tell me what i can change in the next one?
Thanks

Thank you!
@richardyot I would like to get one of your vocal lines
@DavidEnglish I miss some effects over the sounds, but never the less truly meditativ and spiritual
My contribution….maybe I not only record this track over the boxes and post it later this month
Maybe little bit quiet…but I like how it’s turned out 😃

This is really nice - I love the combination of strings and nature sounds. My only criticism is that the intro is a bit long, I think the music could come in sooner.
I like this. Nice overall sound, cool vocals and I like the 'too loud' snare drum. Which is too loud but don't change it. :-)
@richardyot
I especially like the initial part, then the guitars are beautiful, but compared to the beginning, in contrast, it is more monotonous.
@DavidEnglish
I like it, understood as meditative background music is top!
@ janpieter
beautiful composition of sounds, I would not be able to do such a thing
@Overdosed_Ape
I like how you changed in the second song especially the rhythm part
already posted in Creations, my third cover of Ed Sheeran's latest album, I promise it's the last! 😅

Greetings fellow musicians. I haven't been posting lately, but I've been listening.
Here's another one from my sister who wrote and sang this for a wedding. I only had one mic to recorded her, so it was recorded in mono, and it had a lot of hiss. Luckily the mic wasn't placed too badly. It's not a great recording, but I think it has a special feeling, so I dumped it into AUM to try and fix it up with plugins. I used brusfri to remove hiss, a little stereo widening, luxe, TD reverb, TD enhancer, and a compressor. Here's the results. I thought to add some instruments over it, but I think it goes over well enough on its own.
Dav
Very cool. Wish I could write lyrics, sing or play real guitar.
Everything comes together quite well.
Just a random aside, the intro with the stations changing reminded me of this old salsa song:
This is definitely one I could sit down and just space out and relax for a while. It's quite nice sounding.
I don't mind the length for that purpose, tbh.
When the bass kicks in...hot!
I can't access spotify from here, but will give a listen when I can get on my phone!
@Overdosed_Ape
Rythm is great! I could party to this.
@Dav she has a great voice! nice job with the post processing!
Disclaimer: I'm not a musician. I'm just lucky that generative apps like Riffler and Piano Motifs let me have an indirect hand at having something created.![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
I started with Riffler, thinking I wanted to do a glam metal style power ballad. A bunch of randomly generated riffs later, I ended up with one I thought might be vaguely in that genre. Turns out it was a I-VII-IV-VI-VII progression, so I was able to use that later with Piano Motifs to generate something for "lead guitar".
The only thing I did do was some notes changed in a few portions to something I thought I liked better. I also arpeggiated the chord progression that StrummerFX plays in some parts and the same for some of the bass parts. I also messed with some with Geoshred settings for both of the main guitar parts to get something close to a tone I wanted. Couldn't quite tame the feedback but we compromised lol
Maybe my musical tastes can get some credit or blame for the overall result![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
The nice thing for me about being able to play with these apps is that I feel like I'm learning something about music by osmosis, even if it's just painting notes on a piano roll or choosing chord progressions/scales to try.
I like to listen to ambient music when I'm working, so this fits in with some of my listening habits quite well. I have to say that even for ambient it is quite slow and long
but on the flipside the movement/evolution is quite rewarding when it does happen.
I think the drone is quite effective, but I would be tempted to add some very subtle textures to the piece in order to create a bit more interest if I was sat in the producer's chair for this one. Ambient often relies on textures rather than melody or harmony, and while the vibe is well crafted I think there could be a little more going on in this track. Some additional layers of sound and textures, even if very subtle, would really elevate this IMO.
Excellent guitar playing, you sound like a grittier version of Mark Knopfler. I especially like the little percussive touches in the solo, and the overall technique is great.
Outstanding. Great voice and great performance and the song is well-written. What a lucky couple to have this written and performed especially for them![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Considering the conditions under which this was recorded I think it's come out very well. It might be worth trying to re-record at some point, because with a bit more polish it could be even better.
This one is pretty heavy and dark, so I think you got the glam metal vibe just about right![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
The ending works really well, I like the change of pace as the drums drop out and the final guitar part plays out. Overall though the track is too long I think, it could be shortened by a couple of minutes to make it more impactful.
The guitar sounds work quite well, but I think the drums are a bit too electronic sounding for the genre, maybe some acoustic samples would work better (the kick especially sounds very EDMish to me).
Thank you! I've been feeling uncertain about the drums, so I will mess around to see. I just saw an 80's preset in one of Cubasis' FX plugins and went for it hehe. I will look to shorten it in the verse.![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Thanks to all of you for this year of musical sharing and discovery!

This has a kind of exotic quality to it. I like how it comes together out of the initial chaos.![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
@richardyot
"Doudleaux and Felice" - This collaboration is quite tastefully made. Especially with that radio-channel-scanning intro and the drum rolls leading into the song. Lovely bass work as well. For me, the mix sounded a bit muddy; like the instruments are struggling a little with each other to be heard. I like the brass parts that seem to pull my ears when they do come in and remind me of another song (I cannot recall which). Maybe a brass solo around the 2 minute mark would have added to variations. However, I enjoyed the pacing and structure of the song as it is nevertheless. Nice work as always.

"Wheel of Life" - Om! 5 minutes into it I didn't realise it but I had dozed off! Very relaxing. Much needed today, tbh. Thank you for sharing this.
