Generative Sequencers
Looking for apps that have generative sequencers like Beatly Pro and Pure Acid. It would be nice to have more apps that can generate their own melodies and rhythms. Plus points if they let you export both midi and audio.
Edit: Universal is a must, and I would prefer apps that make music in their own (ie Groovebox type apps).
Comments
iOS has quite a few decent generative sequencing options. Do a search on the App Store using the key words Generative & Sequencer, and you'll be presented with the best of them.
The Audiomodern apps are major contenders in this area.
In addition to those listed:
Riffer
Rozeta
Thesys
Fugue Machine
Xynthesizr
All fantastic sequencers but they're step sequencers. But who cares, they're still sequencers every iOS musician should own.
On the generative front, Wotja is the daddy with a linage that goes all the way back to the 1990's (and Wotja 22 is due for release very soon). I constantly find myself tinkering with PolyPhase, but let's not forget Poly 2 and Autony.
I should also add ChordJam.
@jonmoore I'm not understanding your distinction between for example Xynthesizr and PolyPhase. All of those I listed have stochastic aspects.
FugueMachine is not strictly generative, or at least not stochastic, but it can appear to be (as can we all).
Wotja seems really neat!
I also probably need to try Riffer.
The biggest problem with a lot of those mentioned is that they don’t make sound on their own and/or aren’t universal. Those are big time deal breakers I probably should have mentioned.
ZOA — Living MIDI Sequencer - Generative melodies for synths
@impete mentioned in the Wotja thread this morning that they're hoping to drop details of Wotja 22 on Tuesday. It's promised to be their biggest update yet, with a pre-order price before it drops on 1 January.
I suppose I separate randomisation routines from truly generative. But I'm not precious about it!
Autony for midi out, but then Cality and ionarics as midi fx.
Mozaic has several generative scripts.
Polybeat and Cykle
Lots of 4 pockets apps have random pattern generation. Digikeys, strummer, Digistix 1 & 2, helium, etc…
Xequence 2 has Polyhymnia.
Audanika Gestrument and touchscaper
MiRack!
That’s good to know, re-4Pockets. I think I have a couple of those lying around.
Just so you know it’s usually in the hamburger menu, look for random pattern, then you get a pop up to adjust several parameters and the complexity.
Oh yea, Beatly Pro, Piano Motifs.
Stravinski if sill on the App Store. Was free.
Going to try patching. This were inspirational.

Depends on your definition of “generative”, as that could include patching modular MIDI or using MIDI effects.
My go to is usually anything from Sugar Bytes.
I go by Brian Eno's definition seeing as he's the one that populised the term.

If u wire each play head to an arpeggiator its gonna be more generative
Riffler if you like rock riffs.

There is also Jazz Solo by the same dev, but I am not sure if it has the ability to export midi: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/jazz-solo-creator/id1438243726
@jon_bell could confirm?
sort of a side question:
Do you folks feel like each of these generative apps have their own expression/style? Or does their output tend to be similar to each other?
Yes indeed, we're announcing this tomorrow!
Best wishes, Pete
For those who are interested, the music engine in Generative Music One by Brian Eno (the SSEYO Koan Music Engine) is an early version of that in Wotja
We co-published that title (back in our SSEYO days) with Opal Arts. Such a long time ago! Happy days...
Best wishes,
Pete
Piano Motifs is my recommendation. Honestly one of the best apps I’ve spent money on.
If Sugar Bytes ports Nest to iOS that will be awesome. It’s a great modular MIDI sequencer.
Ooh I’ll have to check this one out. Seems really cool. Can you export both midi and audio?
Yep. And it keeps getting better with each update.
Wotja is awesome! 😎👍🏼
Can’t believe I forgot Riffler
