From Air 3 to Air 4?… or Pro
Using an Air 3, great machine, but starting to push the dsp meter a bit to high.
Consider getting an Air 4 but not sure that is enough of an upgrade. If not thinking the Pro.
Anyone having experience with these that could advise?
-thx

Good timing. I'm in exactly the same boat.
Love my Air 3 but it's struggling a bit. I'm thinking that an Air 4 wouldn't be enough of an upgrade and that I should go the Pro M1 route... that price though!
Damn I'll miss the headphone socket.
I would appreciate you making the purchase first, letting me know your results 😆
256GB iPad 9 with the A13 still has the head-phone jack
If you have the budget, go pro.
It's going to depend on your workflow and particular usage. If I remember the numbers kinda right, the Air 3 to Air 4 is something like a 40% increase. In single core performance, the M1 in the Pro is about 20% faster than the A14 in the Air. The multicore performance of the Pro is close to double the Air. It's going to be even higher in some tasks like video/GPU related things and tasks where memory bandwidth is important.
I added an ipad mini 5 to air 3. With an audio 4c.
Havent used machines much. Hope they dont slow down.
Shut the front door!!! There's a brand new ipad with a headphone jack?!
1334 single core score!
Hell yah, base models have always had em. Even though I have an M1 Pro I will eventually buy the last / best ipad with a jack.
I'd gotten it in my head that the 2019 standard ipad was the last one with the headphone jacks. This is great news! Huzzah.
That’s right, but coming from an Air 3 it’s not an upgrade. It has the same A13 chip
I thought the Air 3 was an A12.
The new Mini is good to look at too. The A15 has a bit of a single core performance boost over the M1/A14 at the same clock.
The choices in the current lineup are complicated and not easy to figure out for audio/DSP. It would help if Apple would sync the lineup and make it so the choice was based on size and extra features.
It think the Air 3 has the A12 while the iPad 9 has the A13
The geekbench score is bout 20% faster, but yah not that much of an improvement.
It all came down to storage for me. 512 gb is my new minimum.
If I end up using all Drambo. Then a pro would be good. Instead of x2 ipads. Especially with Drambo updates but with the possibilty of still using aum and more apps on screen. Will have to see about Drambo to Drambo plus an aum. Its cool to make drums and samples. Without sitting at desk.
@NeonSilicon, @AudioGus, it’s my bad, Air 3 has A12 bionic indeed. Apologies.
It's hard to keep track of what they all are using and the various configurations. That's why I wish they would sync the iPad update schedules.
Still, it's not as bad as the mess of "lakes" and i#'s with Intel. My PC had an i5 that was apparently the worst of all i5's because of the particular combination of sub.num.bers it had for that lake/cove/mare or something. Luckily for me the mainboard I had for the PC finally died and I got to replace the CPU in the upgrade.
for me, the benefits of usb-c far outweighed the benefits of a headphone jack. personal opinion. your use case and mileage may vary.
I absolutely agree for working strictly at home.
even away from home. no need for powered hubs, ccks, and battery/power adapters
controllers, anything that can be buspowered. wether the headphones plug in at the top or the bottom is of no importance to me.
lightning ports can provide ~150mah of power before a cck and power source is required. USB-C will supply a little over 7w to external devices
Just cumbersome to use while walking with that headphone dongle.
im back to using wireless headphones. Im using an aptX LL adapter which gets me under 10ms
(for most of the time...)
Doesn’t it still have to plug into the port? I dont mind having a cord it is just hard to walk and hold/use an ipad with something plugged right in the middle port.
Yea, but if I'm just walking around listing to music or using it as a phone, I'm using AirPods.

If I'm writing, there more than the headphones plugged in so it's a non issue to me.
It's also not terribly large if you did wanna use it just in the port.

Yah that is pretty clunky for me. I really loved walking and using BM3 or NS2. If I commute again I will get a base model.
I get it. It a little difficult for me to walk, dick with AUM, with an MPC attached
I'm not using that dongle when I'm out and about. Just in the studio or if I'm setting up shop someplace. And it's usually attached to something else plugged into that port like a usb splitter or hub
