Sweet spot for used iPhone, a bit future proof, without breaking the bank?
I have an iPhone 6 Plus 128 GB and alas it cannot run iOS 13. I wanted to download an app (non-music related) but discovered the app required iOS 13 or better. I plan on buying a used iPhone after Christmas on my local Craigslist, hopefully when people are flogging their older iPhones, or now if the price is right.
Since I use the iPhone 6 Plus 128 GB for music apps (along with my two iPads) I figure you guys would best be able to advise on the sweet spot for a newer, but still used iPhone, that will be a bit future proof, without breaking the bank.

iPhone SE (2nd or the possible 3rd Gen) would be the best sweet spot. It’ll be with the same generation as the iPhone 11, so if you can get that as well.
The last iPhone with a headphone jack was the iPhone 6s/6S+/SE (1st Gen) but may possibly be phased out next year on iOS 16.
I’d recommend getting an iPhone with at least a 6.1 in screen. A lot of music making mobile apps need that extra screen size (e.g Synth One by Audiokit, AUM). 64gb is okay, but I’d recommend at least 128gb of storage.
I live in Vancouver, B.C. Canada and the local Craigslist has lots of iPhone XS units (if that's a good choice) such as this one here https://vancouver.craigslist.org/pml/mob/d/port-moody-iphone-xs-64gb/7420527416.html
If I am forced away from a wired headphone, that's a sad fate, but iOS keeps moving forward and I do not want to upgrade again too soon, also I do not have to go for a 6.1" screen because I have two iPads for any apps that must use more real-estate.
I am not sure I really need 128 GB either, because again I have two iPads for any apps that must use more RAM.
Nothing below a 12 goes to iOS 15.
? Where did you get that idea? It is not true. Even a 6s can go to iOS 15.
A refurbished XS isn't too expensive and should be good through a few iOS releases yet.
XS, XR, or one of the new SE models should all be good budget options IMO.
I’m facing the same dilemma. An 11 has a huge battery, but the 12 is so sexy. Considering a refurbished one, or most probably riding my original SE for a year longer still works... so.
I realize this comment helps nothing. If I were hard pressed to answer, I’d suggest a xs max, but I can’t find them nowhere. I’m giving my teenage daughter an X with 256g for xmas, it was 450€ but I’m sure she’ll love it
I think I would want at least a. 12 if I wanted a little future proofing- it’s the 1st with 5G
Xs would be my recommendation. It will hold value and you can sell it in 2 or 3 years and upgrade to a 12 pro.
They are selling for $300 - $400 USD on swappa.com in the US. Or $400-$450 if you want the Xs Max
Right? I was like “huh”?
(Must be a typo on Poppa’s part) - I’ve had my 11 Pro Max updated to the latest 15.1 since it was released.
edit: downloading and installing 15.2 as we speak!
Super mega happy with my iPhone SE 2020 not sure how many you’ll find second hand though. I bought mine for around 400 euros new and with 128gb of storage.
@Edward_Alexander : a few people have posted the same wrong info about iOS 15 requirements. I wonder if the initial wrong info was accepted as truth and took on a life of its own.
I believe the iPhone XS is the last iPhone to support Force Touch, if that matters to you. It’s useful if you want to use your iPhone as an expressive controller with apps like GeoShred.
Thanks guys, it's a kaleidoscope of ever-changing hardware and software, where musicianship becomes the servant instead of the master.
Really. Cause I have a 6s. I was having trouble updating to 15.1 so I looked it up and I thought that’s what I read. I hope I’m wrong on this one. I’m gonna have to re investigate.
I posted it in two different threads so maybe it was me…
My apologies I was way off on that one, I’m not sure where I saw it, or maybe I misread it… all I know is I’m glad I’m wrong on this one. Must be a storage space issue with the update then.
Lol. I have no idea what happened here. I was astonished after I read that, or misread it, or whatever the heck happened. Glad to know I was wrong. Thanks for pointing this out @Edward_Alexander @espiegel123
From apple

I really like my XS. I found a 256gb one new open-box on ebay for $400, which felt like a steal.
Half of my reason for upgrading was the nicer camera (I had a 6S+ before). The only things I miss are TouchID and the headphone jack.
Yea I’ve been putting off the new phone but it’s about that time.
Not long ago, I replaced by 5c with a refurbished XS and the difference has been immense. Mine is non-max and still the screen seems so much bigger and the CPU is so much faster and camera so much better.
XS is a good option at the moment.
I am now the proud father of a used (but never used the seller claims, and it sure appears that way) iPhone XS Max 256 GB bought on Craigslist for $400 Canadian dollars. Thank you one and all!
2 generations back is usually a solid bet. You have quite a bit of shelf life left and the cost is pretty low. Only consideration is if you want 5G. If so, you want the 12. But if you’re okay living without 5G for a while, an 11 will do just fine.
Nice! That seems like a great price
Great choice. Seriously, well done. Excellent screen with great speakers and a solid A12 chip.
I’m still holding on to my old 8 Plus, lol. I don’t need an amazing camera, or a ton of CPU power, so it suits me fine.
Probably not worth upgrading in such a minor way, I imagine. But they are very cheap. Perhaps something along the lines of the X or XS would be a better choice?
