What DAWs would I recommend as an intermediate iOS Producer | Quick Tips

Here’s a short video explaining a few DAWs I’d recommend based on workflow, as opposed to features. Based on personal experiences.

Apps mentioned:
1. Track based workflow - Garagband, Cubasis (could also add Audio Evolution Mobile Studio, Multitrack Daw, N-track, etc…)
2. MPC Workflow - Koala, Beatmaker 3, Beathawk
3. Sound Design Workflow - Nanostudio 2, Drambo
4. Session View/Live Loops workflow - Garageband, Zenbeats (could possibly put Remix Live, and Ampify Launchpad )
5. Groovebox workflow - Ampify Groovebox, Reason Compact, Figure, Gadget 2
6. Modular/ Make your own workflow - AUM, Audiobus 3, Drambo (could also add ApeMatrix).

Edit: There’s a lot more workflow that I haven’t looked into like
7. Workstation Workflow - Camelot Pro, MK Extreme, Drambo
8. DJ Workflow - Djay Pro, Remix Live (similar to Session View workflow)

  • What? There are EIGHT workflows... after participating in this forum for 3+ years I think I understand the general concepts listed. I guess I should watch the video to continue my education.

It’s more of an overview and my preferred DAWs. I did do a short series on the Live loops method of production but I figured I might as well go big and tackle them individually.

    Here’s to the new year.

  • Nice video as usual. Have you tried Loopy Pro yet? Seems to fit in with this topic

Yeah, and it's awesome how it got released today. Looks great, and has a ton of potential.

I'll have to research more on how I can effectively use it. Most likely in the new year. Got a lot of projects to finish up before the end of the month.

Please suggest which of the 8 workflows can be used with Loopy Pro. I opened it in trial mode and recorded something without really watching the tour but I realize I need to
educate myself. I think Loopers are immediate but they do require you to fine tune your
input chops. AUM tended to push me towards assembling various generators and then jamming over the top in a "recording". I suspect Loopy will be a series of incremental recordings and less reliance on something to create the bass, rhythm and comping tracks.

Loopy Pro reminds me of a Live Loops/Session View production where you start ideas in small short bar loops, then expand it. It has the Tracks View which allows you to further arrange the different sections. So, #4 on my list above.

At least on first appearance. Michael expanding the application to do MIDI mapping, and selecting AUv3 applications takes it closer to the Drambo-esque era. I'd say that if Remix Live, and Drambo came together, Loopy Pro would be the result. That said, the app has the potential to evolve into something more. Best example of this is Koala sampler. Samurai Update + AUv3 update turned it into a behemoth of an application.

The thing with looping application requires you to try and get a solid loop. I found it easier to start with MIDI loops and/or a drum loop, then build off on it.

If you're struggling with making great loops, there's quite a ton of iOS apps excellent for it. I made a video which I linked below, but some of my insta favorites are

    1. Blocs Wave, Splice for audio loops (haven't used Splice in about a year but I still have loops I fetched from the app which I saved to Blocs Wave)
    2. Groovebox, Reason Compact, Gadget 2, Figure to make loops using Synthesizers
    3. TONALY, Odesi, Firo4 to make excellent MIDI chord progressions
    4. Piano Motifs, Beatly Pro to make random generated MIDI loops

Seriously, open up Blocs Wave, press the Auto button, and watch as the ideas come alive. That was the app that got me to understand Live Looping.

Here's a quick live performance using live loops. It's a song from Hillsong called, " You are my strength" but I sorta made the cover a bit more trap based.

    Hope this helps.
