Spidericemidas - Playstation One Music from the 90s
Something old just for a laugh. Get ready for some CHEESE!
I was prompted by a conversation with @jwmmakerofmusic in the thread below to dig out some old mini disc recordings of stuff I'd made back in the 90s with the Codemasters MUSIC program on the Playstation One.

It was my first ever experience with sequencing music using software (as discussed in the thread above). As I recall, it was a pretty deep and very editable package. Chocked full of one-shot samples of drum, perc, vox and synth sounds. You could chop and edit things, reverse samples, insert volume and pitch slopes over time, create trancey snare risers, sub drops, there was a piano roll for the melodic parts and chords, all sorts of good stuff I'd never encountered before. Can't remember if it offered any EQing or Compressors, but if it did, I would have ignored them as I didn't have a clue about them. I absolutely loved this program and spent more hours late into the nights with it than I did with the Tomb Raiders and Resident Evils in my PS1 collection!
This was my Magnum Opus at the time hahaha! Yeah it's 20 minutes! Anyone who listens all the way through is a legend! lol. Well, I was very chuffed with the results back then in my naive musical infancy, I felt like a Paul Hartnoll at the time. PMSL.
Anyone else got any old tracks they made with this software on Playstation they'd like to share here? I'm looking at you @jwmmakerofmusic ! Would be interested to hear! Look Mum No Computer did an episode on the old PS music software below. Quite funny.
So here is my offering from PS1! No distortion on the original mini disc, I think my levels into the iPad were a bit hot last night. Never mind!

Mini Disc! I was so pumped to have an MD/CD stereo. Made my first recordings with a mic and that Aiwa player. MD: As popularized in Last Action Hero! They were awesome.
Fun set. Some real care put into that.
Thanks! Yes, MD was fantastic! My Sony MD deck is still going strong in the hifi stack. Got loads of old stuff backed up on MD. I even backed up my collection of 48K Spectrum game cassettes onto MD, AND they load back into the Spectrum just fine! 😲
Awesome
A journey back in time.
Gonna take a careful listen in some minutes. Just got called to a meeting. But it started pretty well
Amazing what you can do with a ps1 when you have talent! Ravenation!
Bloody ripper tracks mate! I love what you made. I'll have to post a couple of mine sometime today after registering them with Songuard. ^_^
🕺🤣 That old program didn’t sound too bad, really. Knowing what I know now, I’d love to boot it up again some time and try making some new stuff on it. 😁
Cheers and thanks for checking in, mate! Looking forward to hearing your old PS1 stuff!
The funny thing is, everything is still working fine. I still have the saved data on PS1 memory card for the old tracks. I could boot it all up again and do remixes and other arrangements and new tracks on it with a now older and slightly more experienced mind. It was a really good program. [Korg Gadget looks on, nervously] lol.
Fun and lively track!
Would love to hear what the modern Spidericemidas would create with this ancient gear!
Thanks for listening, Daniel! 😁
Oh forgot to add. Tomb Raider and Resident Evil suuuucked. I’ll never understand how games with such clunky controls became popular. Same for Mortal Kombat in the previous generation. Ok, derail over
Heh! Clunky controls definitely made it ‘Survival Horror’ 🤣
Because, to put it bluntly, the gaming demographic back consisted mostly of "bros", and guys (at least the most banal of Murrican "bros") liked busty women and hard violence.
I honestly wasn’t aware of “bros” as you speak until I went off to college in ‘04. Maybe I was sheltered, but it feels like a post-boy band/post-pop punk demographic that sprung up. Guys who lusted after busty women in games were just called dweebs in my day. Usually pale, slobbering incompetents, not the healthy dose of aggro you get with “bros”.
I find this tangent very fascinating now.
LOL! "Dweebs" is also a valid term for them.
I had no idea that this was even a thing Awesome use of a games console!
Imagine the music production tools that the likes of PS4 & 5 could handle these days! It would be a great route for attracting gamers over to music making. Nintendo Switch has Korg Gadget, I believe. There should be more programs like this for consoles. Expand the influence and opportunities, you know?
