See below for a message from the rCreative dev on Facebook. All their iOS music apps are currently free but will be disappearing in Feb at some point.

  • Gotta backup sonogrid :open_mouth:

  • Thanks for the heads up

  • Dang. Definitely thanks for the heads up.

When you say back up you mean the files saved, or the app somehow?

I mean extracting the .ipa file with iMazing
I thought you needed the purchased license to do so. But someone here enlightened me that I didn't need to purchase
Have been backing up some apps since then
Didn't try reinstalling any of them yet, though

  • Does this mean the apps will disappear from the purchase history as well?

    Good question.

The ipa, I’m unfamiliar with the file type, and use?

You should test one? When u get a chance…

  • Sure @Poppadocrock
I used to backup and reinstall a lot when I had a jailbroken device. I used itunes to reinstall

The .ipa file is a package/installer somewhat like a .dmg (i'm not familiar with Mac, so I may be wrong )

I would guess it will disappear from purchase history too. The dev may be giving a heads up because they don't intend on maintain the annual dev protection fee they have to pay the mob... i mean, Apple

You don’t pay the dev fee of $99 / year, you get booted from the servers?

I wonder jow many devs find that their ROI doesn’t cover this expense. Seems there a ton of apps that don’t make that $ threshold - like all the actual free ones.

Yes, you have to pay, and you have to update the app for current devices and iOS versions. Without active maintenance, apps just wither away. In my 8 years of iPad use, I've lost 2 apps (that I know of). There are several similar threads in this forum, relating to vanishing apps by a dev. There's Thor, iMPC Pro, and the synths by Wolfgang Palm (PPG). They are Wavegenerator, Wavemapper, Phonem, and Infinite, and their departure seems to have caused quite a lot of angst in the community.

Not sure if the behavior will be the same with these, but the PPG apps are still in my purchase history, and I can install the one that I don’t already have on the device.

  • RIP Sonogrid - one of my favorites.

I’m still trying to get over the disappearance of FingerPro apps (MoDrum and BassLine). The ephemeral nature of iOS can be daunting.

  • @Poppadocrock I managed to backup and restore an app using iMazing
I know there are more profficient users of this tool here on the forum too.

Ended up backing up Figure, Rebirth, Thor, RhythmStudio, Boom 808, Earhoof, Hexaglyphics, Bassline and some others
Becoming paranoid regarding vanishing apps lately
