True but selecting a song sends me back to the main menu with a simple play bar at the bottom of the screen with a play and next button. The next button does nothing so it is a strange system if rather than selecting from the folder I just browsed to I have to go through the whole file structure again.
Neutron does look good. I'd really like to know that it has its own Files app folder. Just so long as it is dedicated to the app and not shared. It's a bit expensive to by all of these app just to see what they can or can't do. It does look like it is suitable but without that little detail I'm hesitating.
Honestly Doppi is perfect, or close enough. But currently I can't use it, after setting up the file structure I want. As soo as I open the interface it starts scanning and never comes back to life. I keep trying to find a way to turn off auto scan, if it exists but I only get a few seconds to look around befor it locks up.
OK -- MusicFolder has a list of files in the current folder if you go to the "Playlist" tab. To control playback, you can switch to the "Player" tab, where you can:
You probably want everything in a single interface though.
Neutron does create a folder in On My iPad, you don’t need to create your own folder.
Neutron is quite unique in that it also supports web radio streaming from many URLs and quality equalisation on any source, even for streaming, which is ultra rare in iOS apps.
But it doesn't support the Files.app so I can only recommend Readdle Documents which does a great job here too.
It's also a much, much better file manager than Apple's Files.app.
I find MusicFolder quite capable as is. To each their own I guess…
Well my preference would be to have have a folder file list displayed above the play bar. So guess I would also prefer the playback controls in the play bar too. Unless there is a way around that. As it is, with no file list I can't see me using it.
Thanks. I'll definitely take a closer look then.
One says it does, another says it doesn't, I'm confused.
Exactly.

You know, Music Folder 2 is not perfect, but at least it is stable. I tried FE File Browser and it is very good as well. Neutron look like an option as well. I think I'll persist withMusic Folder 2 for a while and hopefully I can get used to it. Would really like a play bar on the audio files screen. If that doesn't pan out I'll probably go with FE File Browser next as it seemed to be pretty easy to set up as a music player.
Are you able to see the File Explorer (On my iPad) folder in Files? That is the shared part of its private file structure. So, you need to put files in there if you want to access them from FE and from Files. You needn't worry about the Pro version; I believe it just allows access to multiple network/cloud servers. Could you post some screenshots of what you see and don't see? I could explain it in a jiffy, and probably suggest an even neater maneuver to get the job done.
And by the way, anytime you Share a file and "Share to Files" is offered, that includes access to the full FE system in the Files sidebar. So you can almost always share a file of any type to FE.
Yes it's all good thanks. I think I have it worked out so I can use it as I want.
Great! Using iOS stuff always makes me feel like I'm in an old-time RPG, "You're in a long, dark corridor with a door at one end and stairs going down at the other end. There's a brown paper bag on the floor."
If it's on fire don't stomp it out.
I was thinking at the very least the folder page where songs are listed would be much better if tapping the song was a start and stop function. I don't see the point of it restarting the song. And for me, having to suddenly open the phone and select another page to stop the song is not necessary. I understand the need for a player page but seems odd with all that space when it could shown album art. the folder page could function quite well even if it was modifies so a tap started the song, a temp ended the song, and each line functioned as a slider for the song position.
That's a very good point -- tapping an already playing song could indeed pause it. I'll add that to the list for the next update!
BTW, here's the philosophy behind MusicFolder 2, which might explain a few of the things that you found odd: It is primarily intended to be used without looking at the screen -- that's why its "main" interface (the "Player" page) is gesture-based. I initially designed it for being used in the car, with the phone sitting on the passenger seat or something, so I could just flick between songs (either shuffling or next/previous) by blindly swiping across the display (which is still not illegal or at least it wasn't back when I made the first version in 2013 -- only "holding" a mobile phone was illegal).
It is also handy when going for a walk and just wanting to find a good next song -- grab the phone and unlock it, then keep swiping (while looking at the road) until you found a song that you like, and then re-lock it and put it back in your pocket.
And Pausing/Playing on the Player screen is double tap, not single tap because I hate accidentally stopping a song (feels like an actual mental shock to me), so the double-tapping is a safety net
I'm sure you didn't want to know any of that, but there you go! Hah!
Tapping running song to pause is firmly on the update list though, thanks for the input!
@SevenSystems while you’re at it, a small thing. If I load a background image, I don’t see any way to remove it. Not really a problem but I would expect there to be a way. Thanks
You mean to return to the default backgorund image? Sure that would be quite easy to do.
😎👍🏼
You really wanted a song player that worked just like Gr^D^DTinder didn’t you?
😆 👍️👍️👍️ Seems like my musical brain is wired in a very archaic way indeed 😂 (although I doubt Tinder has been designed for not looking at the screen...)
Thanks for adding that. It was good to know the back ground behind it. A few things that stood out to me when I (literally) took it for a drive yesterday. When I dock my headphones the audio keeps playing which is i like any media player I've tried. That's a big one for me as I listen at work and often have to just pop the pods is a cradle to deal with something asap. Not having the play page next to the song list page also seemed a strange thing and doesn't click with me when I want to quickly go back a few seconds. That's why I thought the slider on the song list page was worthwhile, but it may just be for me.
Also, as an audio player I used to players being at the same position they were when I unplugged. MP2 reverts back to the top directory. It's all good. There is not much better out there. I like Doppi but it has no future and won't deal with a large amount of songs. I've tried a few and there is not much that will behave like a file player that can be found in the Android domain.
I think better still would be to show the cover art.
It would certainly be possible technically, but I tend to think in "modes", and when I'm in "song selection mode", I want all available screen space for the song list. Once I've picked a song, I want to switch to "listening mode" and have all the space for those functions, etc... 🙂 but of course both approaches are equally valid.
Ah yes, MusicFolder doesn't remember the last open folder after a while -- I'll add that to the list to add.
Thanks for your feedback, always glad to receive useful suggestions. 👍️
Also I'm not trying to say this is how it should be. It's you product so that's your call. If it interests you though check out FE File Explorer and Doppi. Both folder players. They have integrated both screens together. One opens the "listening mode" window but the controls stay in place if you tap to bring back the list as the primary focus. The other does the same sort of thing but in a slightly different way. Either way the listening and list pages sort of coexist.
I actually use FE File Explorer as my primary file manager so I'm already familiar with it 🙂 I'll see if an option can be added to show the seek bar on the playlist page as well! 👍️
@SevenSystems one problem I have with Music Folder is that if I update files by overwriting them the app gets confused and says it can’t find the file.
Let’s say I have some files in the folder called “My Song 1” and “My Song 2” and I make a new mix for “My Song 1” and overwrite the existing one in Music Folder, I will get an error message saying the app can’t find the file, even though it’s there, but it’s been updated.
Hey, thanks for the report. I'll have a look. Does this also happen if you "Refresh folders" in between? When exactly does the error message appear?
