What are you listening with?

I'm curious what everybody's using with their I-devices to monitor the tracks you make with all your IOS Apps and DAWs for mixing purposes. I think the apps and DAWs have all matured to where most of us are using more than the IPad speaker or headphones. I like IOS because of the low prices for killer equipment, unfortunately I'm now a hardcore Cheapskate on buying hardware.
Monitors have to match up with your interface (I'm a Behringer IStudio guy), but I'm wanting to know opinions on how things sound from bus riders I trust. I'm looking at some M Audio AV 40's so far...

  • I use the M-Audio AV40's and they're pretty good! When I'm building tracks, I usually use Shure 440 headphones....

  • I'm using headphones: Audio Technica ATH-M50x. I don't have any house space for a room, and it would be too noisy anywhere in my house anyway. :-) Someday, I'd like to have a place--even a small closet. That day, I'll get some decent monitors. :-)

  • Any old cans with enough bass and separation from the rest of the world, with not too much midrange to tire my ears. I got the superlux 668b for mixing but haven't got anything to mix lately ;)

  • Sony MDR-7506 for cans, Tapco s8 powered monitors one I turn the beast on, Edirol MA-15D for messing about. Just got them for a song on craigslist and I like 'em. Nothing like the Tapcos but they sound fine.

  • AKG K702 reference headphones, Bose headphones, Behringer Truth monitors

  • edited June 2014

Event ALP 5s, AKG K240 DFs, the old good 600 ohm ones, through a Presonus FireBox, soon to be a Focusrite iDock. For just listening and composing a set of Sennheiser Amperions which are really quite good but not as flat as the AKGs or the Events.

  • I have some of Behringer HPX6000s headphones and a pair of M-Audio BX8 R2 studio monitors.

  • I've got more headphones than Imelda Marcos. Another one of my many diseases...

  • I have the Apple earbuds that came with the iPhone, but I don't like the muffled sound - I also have a pair of (cheap) Digital 'phones that sound better, but then I'm probably not as much of an audiophile as some of you folks. I have two pair of nice Sony 'phones that I can't seem to locate at the moment; but I have found that the stereo system in my Honda Element cranks with the iPhone plugged into the AUX, and it gives me a heads-up on whether the bass frequencies are too much & need to back off from. I would like to get something along the lines of the iLoud, but I can't afford anything like that any more than an iPad.

  • ATH M50 headphones and Yamaha HS 8's. Bought both with much input from this helpful group. Alesis iodock for the interface.

  • Well so far I think the headphones and monitors are all over the place! I wish I could afford @Flo26's setup. I'm actually a little surprised there isn't a common set of headphones or monitors yet. Do any of you that had your monitors on your Computer set ups think you needed something different for IPad DAWs and apps? My IOS stuff sounds a lot cleaner than my best efforts on any PC or Mac I ever used.

  • I use three different headphones (Technics RP...bla...1200,JBL J22 and Sennheiser HD590) and some Mackie HR824.I also love to check my stuff on my roommates HUGE Infinity speakers.

  • My setup is Sony MDR-V6 headphones and Behringer MS16 powered monitors. The headphones are solid. Given the option and money I'd go for the MDR-7506 or the Audio Technica ATH-M50x and a number of different options in terms of monitors but I'm very happy with this setup right now.

  • I have two rooms I listen in, one has a pair of B&W 601's, and the other some excellent floor standing speakers made by Neat.

I also have a collection of headphones, the ones I trust the most being some Sennheiser HD650s, and I do my final mixes with them and with the speakers.

The main thing is to try and listen on a variety of speakers and phones, because there are no perfect monitors, and all rooms also affect the sound. What sounds good in one space (even with great monitors) might not sound good in another.

  • The finished iPhone tracks on my soundcloud were done with the stock Apple earbuds as well as my car stereo(utilizing the aux in in my VW GTI). Yeah, I would work out bed tracks on Figure on my daily commute last year.
    :-D

For my iPad, I'm using AT M50's and enjoying them a lot.

To test mixes, besides the car, I'll plug in to my home stereo; a vintage all tube Harman Kardon integrated amp powering a pair of Klipsch towers.

  • For headphones I use Shure SE425's or some new Focal Spirit Pros I just go that I think are very impressive.

You don't need different monitoring solutions for iPad work compared to computer work, same thing :)

  • @Tarekith: okay here's the question for you since we are all familiar with your great Mastering and your sound: If you had to immediately finish a crucial mastering project, and somebody had stolen your great monitors, and you could only spend up to $300 for replacements, what would you buy today? (No pressure, but I bet some of us would like to know your opinion)

  • At that price range, I think I'd be more inclined to get something like the Focal Spirit Professional headphones. Probably more accurate than a pair of monitors would be at that price range.

People ask me all the time for monitor recommendations, but unfortunately I haven't heard any of the low end models in years. If we were talking $1500-$2000 monitors I'd have more experience and could make an informed opinion. Sorry :(

  • Okay fair enough :-( I guess I'll go to Guitar Center's monitor room and trust my own ears. Believe me, I trust your ears more than mine! I'll definitely look into the Focal Spirit headphones, thanks that that tip!!

  • Doug's ears.

  • FWIW, I used to own some Alesis M1 MKII Actives about that price, and I thought they were great if you plugged the ports. I still know a lot of guys who use them now.

  • Based on the recs here and elsewhere I purchased a pair of Focal Spirit Professional headphones. I just gave it a test run with my music library and it is a revelation. I can pinpoint instruments, and hear instruments I hadn't noticed before. Looking forward to using them with my music.

  • Audio-technica ATH-AD700, sennheiser HD 380 Pro, and Sony MDR-V6. I use the AD700 headphones the most as they're the most comfortable by far. The Sony's aren't as flat as the others so I tend to use them the least. I use the sennheiser's for recording since they're closed ear so I don't get any feedback. I live in an apartment so I can't really use speakers to monitor my sound.

  • Sorta old M-Audio BX8's, or Sennheiser HD 25-1 II's (been using these more often recently).

I want some open-ears, been keeping an eye on craigslist for some Beyerdynamics.

  • I live in an apartment so I can't really use speakers to monitor my sound.

    My situation, too.

  • 10 years ago I began with Yamaha NS-10, after I change more Active Monitors without happy resolute ...after I bought a pair of Yamaha HS-80M and now I'm happy again :-)
