  • Oh no. One more reverb i feel tempted to buy. I have 6 reverbs allready. I………must……….resist…….ahhhh!!

  • I really wanted to instabuy this one but I just spent like $50 in apps the day before. Soon though. I also really like how the GUI looks like an acid trip where you’re stuck in the Flying Circus

  • Oh yes. That UI is so super sweet

DDMF has been doing Skeuomorphic interfaces so this is a departure in the GUI.

For the record: All the controls are accessible as AU parameters in AUM as well as a control for Preset Loading.

I also bought "mLFO" today so I wonder what automated rapid knob twisting will do to these "physical spaces". Could be interesting. NO! It's just a way to overwork the DSP and add crackling. Bad idea.

  • I’m going to take a look at this reverb later if you’re curious about it folks.

As a consumer of Reverbs on all platforms: what Reverb is this new contender most like?
AudioReverb from @Virsyn comes to mind for me just based on the demos: A really clean workhorse of an IOS Reverb. Not a lot of fireworks that many of us tend to gravitate towards like FAC Alteza or Eventide's Blackhole. I grab the EO2 after being educated to the DSP skills of the Valhallah programmer that provided the reverb code for that unique IOS product with it's "freeze" mode feature. Guitar players should know a lot about EOS2 and freeze mode to emulate a piano's sustain pedal for guitar... an epic effect to be used wisely for infinite sustain.

Personally I don't think there is anything else on iOS quite like this. There are several algorithmic reverbs that cater to different needs, such as Pro-R for bread-and-butter mixing duties, or FAC Alteza for ethereal otherworldliness, but AFAIK there are no captures of actual real echo chambers like the ones in Magic Verb.

In the 1950s and 1960s before artificial reverb existed, you could either use the reverb from the live room where the performers were recording, or use an echo chamber. For vocals in most cases engineers preferred to record them in a booth rather than the live room, and use the echo chamber to add reverb.

Almost all the classic records from the 50s and 60s, from Frank Sinatra to the Beatles, use echo chambers. When you hear Frank Sinatra, you're hearing a recording that was enriched with an echo chamber.

Capitol Records famously has eight echo chambers built underground below the parking lot, Abbey Road and Muscle Shoals also have famous echo chambers that are heard on countless well-known recordings.

Simon and Garfunkel famously stood inside an echo chamber to record the backing vocals for The Only Living Boy In New York.

When plate reverbs became widely available in the 1970s they replaced echo chambers to some extent (although the chambers at Abbey Road and Capitol are still in use to this day). I would say in terms of recording history there have been 3 major ages of reverb: echo chambers in the 50s and 60s, plates in the 70s and 80s, and the classic digital units from the 70s and 80s onwards (Lexicon 480, EMT250 etc).

Since Ian Sefchick (Mr MagicDeathEye) was an engineer at Capitol, I'm working on the assumption that the IRs in Magic Verb are sampled from the Capitol echo chambers, but of course I could be wrong. My guess is that they aren't advertising the fact due to rights issues.

Thank you for the info. :)

  • Yeah this is a great one. Using it subtly really adds a lot without adding a lot

  • @richardyot
I get the impression that it's a hybrid mix of IR and algorithmic. The verbs have a little more life to them than static IR's. This has been the trend with desktop IR verbs for a few years now.

Even though I suspect there's a little more than IR's going on, the UI/UX is kept as simple as can be. I really applaud this approach as it's not only idiot-proof, it shows a huge amount of confidence with regard to the core sonic characteristics of the presets.

  • I took a dive on this yesterday and I just have to say wow. It sounds absolutely excellent. Ran Slammer and Ting and OB-XD through it last night. It was heavenly.

Bit of disappointment here, MagicVerb can’t stop crashing within GarageBand 😕

You're trying to park a Mercede's into tight parking space blindfolded. It's not good for the Mercedes.

Sorry... just an impulse to bash Apple's freeware. This will probably be addressed in an update but it would be wise to refund to be sure if you're tied to GB.

  • I am getting crashes on an older iPad running iOS 12.5, it could just be the age of the iPad though cos it’s running fine on my iPhone 11 on iOS 15.3. I’ve sent an email to the dev though in case it’s something on their end

  • How is working on IPad cpu side?

On pc I got serious lag and spikes, it saturates all cpu alone.

And I got some nice pc😂😂😂

Wanted to try on iPad because on pc is impossible to use.

Every control you move you get cpu saturated immediately.

  • @BCKeys no I haven’t heard anything yet unfortunately I may send another email just to check

  • I also can confirmed that is pretty unoptimized also on iOS.

Really sorry but I asked a refund.

Nice overview and demo Jamie 👍

Thank you. I’ve used it since the stream and got to be honest, had a couple of crashes but I still think this is one of the most pro apps on iOS. Clearly it does need a little tweaking to optimise it but coming from such a stellar team I have every confidence that it will calm down. It’s not unusual for an initial release to be a little…… sensitive.

  • will it get into the MagicDeathEye bundle?

Yeah I don’t see DDMF sleeping on getting it optimized, I’ll definitely be sticking with it cos I’d be absolutely stunned if they didn’t get it fixed up.

  • I must admit I hadn't really looked into the CPU hit as I've been running it on an M1 iPad in Cubasis with multithreading enabled so I've not run into any issues. But DDMF plugins usually go through optimisation cycles so I'm sure things will improve.

But as mentioned earlier in this thread, much as I don't view MagicVerb as being as essential a purchase as the MagicDeathEye compressors. I do view it as unique on the iOS platform for the quality of its real chamber emulations. There's a little more life in the emulations than IR's alone provide and the asking price seems fair for what's on offer. Be patient with the dev, I'm sure he'll sort out the CPU spikes soon enough.

Anyone ever get a response from him about the cpu spikes? I get the spikes and it runs my device pretty hot and murdered the battery. I think it needs some optimization but I never get a response. I’m debating leaving a bad review to trigger a response but would like to hear if anyone has heard anything before I do that and look like a Karen

  • I have this app. It's a nice reverb, but at that price point Pro R blows it out of the water. Different sounds, of course, but in terms of versatility and value for money: Pro R all the way.

I have and love both, but IMO the chambers in Magic Verb are the best thing ever on vocals. Pro R of course can do a lot more, but chambers are really hard for pure algorithmic reverbs to mimic.

I did notice my vocals sound better lately. I thought maybe my chops were improving, but I'm sure you're correct here.

  • It’s definitely a one trick pony but it does the trick really well. I find it worth the price but would really like to see some stability updates since the price is as high as it is

This reverb sounds amazing. Probably one of my favourites reverb on ipadOs ( chambers are superbs) . I really like its minimalistic and very nice GUI.

But the lags, glitches, cpu spikes and short audio drops that it makes when changing settings ( especialy the reverb lenght and pre delay cursors) are a real drawback. It makes setting up your reverb a not fluid experience with no real time feedback. It's really ennoying! (even with the buffer at 2048).
A shame cause in terms of results and easy goingness this is a fantastic reverb. Apparently there was no update since its release.

  • I finally left a somewhat critical review so hopefully that’ll maybe get the developer to give it some attention. I’m sure other reviews would help streamline it if they aren’t going to answer emails

What is the criticism? Does it crash a lot?

Yeah occasional crashes and it runs the battery pretty hot and the cpu pretty high. It just runs a bit like it isn’t optimized very well for iOS yet and needs a stability update
