Yamaha PortaSound PSS-140 - Vintage Keyboard from 1988 - Let’s Record it in Loopy Pro with Effects
If you are of a certain age then it's possible that your first introduction to synths and keyboards came in the shape of something like this from Yamaha or Casio.
I've featured a few of these vintage FM Yamaha Keyboards on the channel over the years and it always delights me when I put them through different and modern effects,
This particular model, the Yamaha PSS-140 was released way back in 1988, and all the sounds were made with the 2 Operator YM2413 Chip, as far as research tells me.
It's also possible that you may have one of these old retro keyboards in your house somewhere or you may know someone who does have one.
If you do its great fun to get these into your iPad with Loopy Pro or whatever and throw a load of effects on it.
Plus, it's also great for sampling, the sound already has a Lo-Fi Gritty sound to it anyway, so it'll fit right into today's Lo-Fi vibe.
And because the PSS-140 is very basic and has no octave shifting, Loopy Pro is ideal since we can pitch and shift things around as we wish.
This cost me about £20 on eBay, where you can find tons of these old Yamaha PSS & PSR Keyboards, so they won't break the bank and you can have a lot of fun effecting, sampling, sequencing, and mangling these old sounds.
Just out of interest this particular model only has headphone output and no midi, so I did just play it in, but a lot of more complex models did have midi.
I hope you enjoy the video.
