The Antikythera Mechanism / 200 BCE Computer

As always, our futuristic hubris is undermined by the past. I heard about this device decades ago when they had little clue to it’s purpose or complexity… well, now we know everything.

  • Yes, most of this is old news, but UCL have belatedly deemed it worthy of a PR round and rightly so. The Antikythera AK-1 wasn't a bad synth for its day, but building oscillators out of gearwheels was a bit of a dead end in sound design. If you think a DX7 was hard to program, you should try aligning wheels to Metonic cycles with the manual in western Dorian. The story goes that Archimedes was jamming on his prototype when a Roman centurion pulled his headphones off, and his last words were "Don't fuck with my loops, man."

  • If you ever find yourself in Athens, you must visit the National Archeological Museum. It’s a bit off the main tourist route but coming face-to-face with the Antikythera mechanism is something else.
