Mac + iPad integration is about to get a whole lot better! (Universal Control)
I’m just now hearing about Apple’s new Universal Control (currently in beta) and it’s very exciting how well this could benefit us Mac + iPad producers! Control everything on your iPad with your Macbook trackpad and keyboard - including shared clipboards, drag and drop files between iPad and Mac, etc! (Or visa versa, control mac from iPad) I think this could be a game changer.
I already enjoy using iOS AUV3 instruments over IDAM into my Mac daw, but now we’ll be able to control and program the iOS plugins without taking our hands off our mac.
My ‘18 iPad Pro has been frozen at iPad OS 14.something for quite a while now, but this could compel me to finally upgrade .. I just hope it doesn’t break anything else - I finally have a mostly flawless iOS audio environment on my current version, so any major update makes me a bit nervous.
Any thoughts or experiences with the new beta so far?

@tja Why are you anti-2fa out of curiosity?
Yeah I hate that.
Monterey OS breaks to many plugins and DAWs on my MBP so it’s a no from me.
Really? Made no difference at all to me. The biggest impact was from the implementation of Metal, but that was prior to Monterey.
Monterey has been fine for me in Ableton, Bitwig and Reason. All plug ins working fine for me here.
Ditto, not a single issue with any plug ins when switching to Monterey. Totally seamless here.
Very happy with Monterey.
Some of my plugins are running in Rosetta and are still working well. The only plugins I’ve ‘lost’ are the ones I have not bothered installing on the new MBP.
MPC software my msin DAW for now is not ready yet. That was the main reason I jumped back to Moajave. Eventide plugins stopped working aswell.
I heard some people are having issues with some iZotope plugs in Monterey, so I decided to stick with native only for now on my new M1 Pro MBP. Everything has been rock solid so far, and Bitwig 4 in particular has been a thing of beauty on this platform
I’m more concerned with upgrading iPadOS. Got a few years of projects to backup first, spread among over a dozen hosts and groovebox apps.
I also use my iPad as sound source via IDAM in Logic and it works really nice. Do you know if this works the other way around? I mean using the MAC/Logic as a remote sound source with an iPad DAW? LoopyPro i.e.?
Monterey is great here, m1 / ableton 11 …
I don’t think it’s possible from mac to iOS like that. I wish IDAM supported bi-directional audio, to be able to use iOS effects on Mac audio streams without leaving the digital realm. That’s been #1 on my wishlist for a while now.
I may need find an audio interface with SPDIF that works with iPadOS. My Komplete Audio 6 has spdif, but unfortunately can’t use that output on iPad, since there’s no driver support for accessing the perquisite internal settings.
As a multi-device user, this is the main reason I was excited for Monterrey and it's been disappointing that it was delayed so long.
Maybe I’m lacking the imagination but I wonder what it could really do for a musician apart from dragging and dropping audio files around. BTW, the video shows that you can’t do that with all file types. Do you think operating your iPad from the Mac is really beneficial? iPad apps are designed for touch. The other way round it’s even harder.
Lots of iPad apps have keyboard and mouse/trackpad support now. I think this is simply another step on the path to deeper multi-device integration for Apple. I can easily see myself moving to using a laptop and iPad as my dev environment instead of the iMac I use now. Two very portable devices that cooperate to allow me to have multiple displays and devices to test on is pretty appealing.
I also expect that touch/tablet support from the iPad to the Mac will be supported more heavily in the future -- maybe even some new API's at this year's WWDC.
That might be true for many iOS apps - but AUV3 plugins are often very similar to their desktop counterparts and function the same with mouse input.
I like to use my diverse collection of iPad AUV3 instruments with my desktop DAW, and to be able to quickly pull up or edit a plugin chain in AUM from my Mac would be pretty seamless with universal control. Certainly less cumbersome than switching back and forth from one device to the other when I want to do a quick adjustment or even involved sound design. I often find it easier to do precise edits with mouse than I do with touch in a lot plugins, especially those with small UI elements.
I’m surprised to hear that people are having issues with Eventide plug-ins, as they’ve been rock solid for me through all upgrades.
This was exactly my thought. I can see the benefit of dragging samples and files from iPad to Mac but that’s about it. As you say, for me the touch aspect of iPad is the main reason for use. I’d actually like it the other way around, controlling the Mac from the iPad. Sort of like Maschine does.
