Giving Tidal a go
No streaming service is without it’s sins, and I recently weighed in supporting Spotify’s owner’s right to invest in militarised AI tech if that’s what he wanted to do with his cash in a debate on this forum. My personal line in the sand hadn’t been crossed by that and railing against streaming in general at this point feels to me like attacking the Spinning Jennys in an attempt to stop the industrial revolution, with as much likelihood of success.
As a left leaning trans woman though, I object on general principal to right wing b*llocks, and Spotify’s championing of idiot-hosting anti-vax conspiracy-theorist promoting ‘comedian’ Joe Rogan, highlighted by the stance taken by two artists I admire, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, tipped the balance for me.
Simply transferring my paltry music consumer business to the plutocrats of Amazon, Apple, or Google didn’t particularly appeal, though, so I thought I’d give the (partly) artist-owned and (somewhat) better-royalty paying Tidal a go.
They have different subs level, and if you are feeling particularly generous you can opt in to an ‘enhanced’ level at £19.99 a month which pays a higher rate of royalties directly to the artists you actually listen to. I’m not that principled, so I settled for the ‘HiFi’ level which offers CD quality ad free listening for £9.99, the same as I was paying to Spotify. They have a ‘dollar for the first three months’ offer running too. Refreshingly, they seem to have pretty much the same range of rather obscure dark ambient, industrial, noise and electronic stuff I habitually listen to, so I don’t seem to be giving anything up by this.
Eh, it’s a minimal gesture, a bit of performative nonsense that costs me nothing. (actually saving me £24 over the first quarter). But I got to tell Spotify’s leaving questionnaire that Joe Rogan was the reason I was off. Wow:
Now I really feel like a clicktavist!

Thank you for this, I am an Tidal user for years, and the hifi subscription used to cost 20 euro for a month. For me CD quality is enough.
I paid that for years. I had no idea they introduced hifi and hifi plus subscriptions (used to be compressed or not compressed). So I have downgraded immediately after I read your message. Maybe I don't have access to the master file recordings anymore, but that is not worth 10 euro extra.
And a tip, I use the Audials software to record the Tidal audio stream, so I can use the wave or 24/96 flac files on my music players, I own a few Chinese Zishan high-res players with good DAC and opamp.

More Yoko Ono for the people
But Yoko did also release this alt disco classic in 1981. Which also features the last ever recording of John Lennon. He played guitar on this, and quite literally hours later was shot dead by Mark Chapman - he was clutching the tape of this recording. https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Walking_on_Thin_Ice
