Patterning 2 midi sequencing Koala Sampler
Hello there, can you guys please help me how to sequence Koala sampler with Patterning 2?
I want to efficiently midi trigger samples in Koala. But I dont know how it works.
I currently also have audiobus 3 and AUM.

Which would you prefer to use Audiobus or AUM? It'll be easier to be more specific for one or the other. You also can just run standalone for both, without any host, if you prefer.
But, in general.
Switch to the MIDI tab in the In the pattern view of Patterning 2. This is where you can set the behavior, port, midi channel, and note for the track output. You probably want to start by setting the output mode to "MIDI". Note the port name "Patterning 2" you'll need to set this name as the MIDI input in AUM or Audiobus.
The MIDI Note needs to match between Koala and Patterning. You can either change Patterning to send to the default mapping in Koala, or you can tell Koala to listen to what Patterning sends instead.
In the Koala settings > MIDI, there's a toggle for "Use MIDI mapping". If this is off, Koala's pads trigger from note C2 upward chromatically by default. So you would change each Patterning ring to match the note of the pad you want to trigger. For instance, if ring 1 is your kick, and the kick is on the first pad, then you would change the note in Patterning to C2. If the snare is on ring 2 and Koala pad 2, then you would change ring B to use C#2.
There is also a MIDI Note Offset button in Koala. You could set this to 60 to match patterning's default notes.
Conversely, if you choose to leave Patterning at the defaults, you would turn on "Use MIDI mapping" in Koala, and tap the "Map MIDI" button that appears. This takes you back to the sequence screen in MIDI Learn mode. Tap the pad you want to map to select it. Now in Patterning you can go to a track, set it to MIDI output, solo it and press play. Back in Koala (if midi routing is set up OK) you should now see that the note has been mapped to the pad and you should see it triggering. Repeat for each pad and track that you want to map. When done you can turn off midi mapping with the button at the bottom left of Koala.
Note, to make any of this work, you'll need to be sure that Koala or the host it's running in have Background Audio enabled.
If all that makes sense, the other half of the equation is midi routing to get the midi from Patterning 2 to Koala. That part depends on the host if any, but the ideas apply to all routing situations.
As for MIDI Routing. You basically need to set up Koala to listen to whatever MIDI port Patterning 2 is sending to. By default the name of this port is Patterning 2. This is the name that you need to set Koala to listen to if set up in Audiobus or AUM.
If you set Patterning up to send to the Host port (AUM for instance), then you need to set Koala in AUM up to listen to "AUM Destination", not Patterning.
I hope that makes sense. Basically both ends of the connection have to be set to the same port, a point that often confuses people. It's natural to think you'd set Patterning to send to AUM and AUM to listen to Patterning, but that's not the case.
Koala in standalone seems to listen to the Patterning 2 port without any additional settings, other than enabling background audio.
@wim
Thanks a lot Wim! Appreciate it. I think I sorta figured it out, by pressing some random buttons. I tried your information in AUM, within patterning 2 I set up Ableton Link enabled. Patterning 2 acts as the main clock this way, and Koala listens succesfully to midi notes from Patterning. I am not sure how to make AUM act as a host. This is because I dont have knowledge about AUM, i used it not more then 4 times.
I think the best option to sequence Koala, is to manually midi map it. Hopefully this way I can save it as a preset/template.
To be honest, I only bought the iPad because of Patterning 2. I really dig this app, but setting it up like this kinda throws me off. I wish there was something else which was equally as good that I know off. I heard about the alternative drambo, but I am not sure if I want to go down that rabbit hole. I have a analog four, and the trade off is not so great.
I'm glad you got it working. No need to add AUM into the mix unless you want to start using more apps together. As long as the midi gets from patterning to koala, you don't have to do anything more.
What AUM does is allow you to work with more apps together and to mix their levels, etc. It's worth learning more about when you're ready to expand your horizons.
Drambo is a lot of things, but I wouldn't say a replacement for Patterning is one of them. There's really not anything a lot like Patterning on iOS. With Patterning and Koala you have two of the best and most fun apps there are. 👍🏼
