iPad app with very specific functions

I’m looking for an iPad software instrument app of some kind to complement my Nord Stage 3 in live gig situations. In short, I need functions which my old Yamaha MOX 6 has but which the Stage 3 (a much, much better instrument in all other respects) lacks.

My needs are very specific. Perhaps there´s a name for what I mean, but if so, I´m unfamiliar with the terminology.

Anyway - this is what I need:

I need to create very specific sorts of patches. For example, I need a patch which will play an automated, pre-programmed chord rhythm with a string sound on one particular song, following the chords I play on the keybed. The reason being that...well, I can´t play that rhythm manually while also singing lead on that song. I made a patch, using the sequencer on my current ol´ Yamaha MOX6, which does this. I also need a patch that´s just a soft pad with the mod wheel all the way down, while making an automated "sweep" up and down at a given BPM, when the mod wheel is all the way up. I created this patch on my MOX6 by "recording" movements with the modulation wheel and then turning those movements into a patch.

I’ve made a couple of very short video clips showing what the patches on my MOX6 sound like. I don’t know if it’s possible to post videos here, though? I’m completely new to this forum.

Welcome to the forum! Be prepared for lots of answers, many of which may be confusing. You'll get there though.

Usually people upload videos to YouTube then post the link here, which automatically embeds the video in the post. If that doesn't suit you then you can also upload the video to something like dropbox and post the link, but in that case people need to download the video and not as many people will take the time.

The app you need will depend on the sounds you're after, so the video of the patch sounds would be good. The good news is there are surely plenty of iOS Synths that can do what you need for the first. The second is a little trickier and may require another app.

  • First and foremost… welcome @maceofresk

This seems like a multiple part question. I’m a little unclear exactly what you are trying to accomplish, but I’ll take a stab at it.

It sounds like you want to sequence your external synthesizers and create a specific sounding patch with mpe.

Maybe a host like AUM, creating and saving all your midi sequences as a session/preset then loading as needed to live sequence your hardware.

The patch can be created in most synths available, just depends on exactly what you are trying to create, and sound you want. Or if you want to use the original patch, you can record the audio from your hardware synth and play it back as audio. AUM can do this as well.

Videos- I thought you could but I’m having trouble doing it at the moment, I’m blanking. I think there is a size limitation so shorter videos work best. if you have them in your photo album, or accessible through the files app you should be able too. Click on the small picture icon at the top of the new comment. You will see Bold, Italics, etc…then the last one is insert an image. Give it a try to see if you can. Otherwise people load to YouTube or Vimeo then share it here.

Check out "One Man Band Lite" or "One Man Band Live"... Live accepts standard style files, compatible with Yamaha PSR, DGX and Tyros arranger keyboards. Lite has 10 styles for a test drive.

Lite is free and Live costs $30.

NOTE: I just re-installed OMB and it's a standalone app that does NOT support sending of MIDI when it's window is closed which I find annoying. It's user interface is really terrible but I don't see a better app to replace an "arranger synth" but I'll keep looking to see if anyone has "filled this gap".

Lol. Well put disclaimer. We mean well.

There are a lot of great synth options, some crossover. What waveforms do you need in your oscillatiors, how many oscillators, etc… it’s a long list. I’m guessing you don’t or can’t have the actual synth creating that sound on stage?

You could try just the audio too. If you remove the audio from the video, with an app or shortcut, you can use SoundCloud or another place and just share the audio. Which is the main part anyways.

    @maceofresk
Have you look at Keystage? Very similar to mainstage on the mac (and I actually prefer it to mainstage)
Its works of song parts, which you can assign different AUs/sequences/external patches and controls/etc to the various parts. The dev is also a Nord guy....

  • You guys seem like a great bunch! 😆

Ok…here are a couple of short clips demonstrating what I’m after.

    Sounds interesting.

Does keystage provide the option to also play back MP3 backing tracks and display (scrolling) lyrics? That would be the ultimate awesomeness. Then I could leave my current iOS backing track app behind and use the same iPad for both backings and additional synths. (I always bring my iPad for backing tracks anyway.)

Features like those would solve a lot for me.

@maceofresk Yes, it does audio playback. You also set cue points per song section so as you move around the song, the audio parts follow along.

It wil also do lyrics, jpgs, sheet music, etc. all done in sync.
It's an extremely impressive app for keyboard players. I'm not a piano player at all and use it extensively for performance.

There's a lite version you can try out.

Camelot will be it's closest competitor (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/camelot-pro/id1326331127) and it's a pretty mixed bag of who prefer what app over the other. I think if you buy all the KeyStage modules, it's a bit more than Camelot, but I found KeyStage does more of what I need.
