If you're struggling with CPU issues, it might be time to consider Loopy Pro. You can go virtually unlimited by capturing to audio as you go and then idling the apps when you don't need them. I run an Air 2, and can go practically forever this way. And the good thing is those idled apps keep all their settings, so when you want to re-do something or add something, they come back just as you left them.

It's a radical change from an AUM based workflow, but you can't beat the benefits for over-taxed hardware.

  • Interesting concept \ I downloaded the app but haven’t started playing with it yet. Does the 7 day trial start as soon as you download it?

I think it starts when you open the app and activate the trial. Before you do that nothing work. After activating everything works and the countdown starts.

You probably want to check out some vids first though to shorten the learning curve. There are plenty popping up all over YouTube. Not many highlight the "Idling" benefits, but there's nothing to taking advantage of it, and the benefits are huge.

  • Bad ass, I know Sounds for More has a whole series and he breaks app down very well.

You probably have it but WaveFolder is very light and very useful. Subtle cut through a mix type stuff to very unsubtle.

  • I actually don’t have that. I’ll look into it and see if it fits

  • KQ Dixie from @RyoutaKira the others i dont know from him. Viking Synth from @Blamsoft and the hole collection. OB-Xd from Jorge Reales and his collection. Fractal Bits and especially SunVox from Alexander Zolotov and SynthMaster Player from @kv331audio_bulent. I know Loopy Pro is superb, but some sounds with effects on different Midi Channels is a real nice to have. I know i can make bindings in LP to the synths to switch on/off. I hope some other folks found some nice apps with low cpu usage. :)

  • Fractal Bits - great call!

Here's my list so far. Each category is roughly in order of CPU usage, with the AU window closed, notes being triggered, and the most raw/minimal settings. But every app offers a different range of options.

    Drums
    Sunvox
    Ruismaker
    Loopy Pro
    Fractal Bits

    Poly Synths
    Sunvox
    KQ Dixie
    Poison 202

    Effects
    Sunvox AU
    PeakQ and AUM's stock filters

    Worth Mentioning
Troublemaker, Ruismaker Noir (Low CPU, but monophonic)
    Phasemaker (Pretty low CPU)
    Lagrange (With simple osc waveforms)
Synthmaster One (With FX and oversampling off)
Module Pro (Low for many sampler presets)
FAC Drumkit (Lighter than Drumcomputer or Drambo, offers synth + loading samples)

FAC Drumkit? Really? I found it real heavy on the cpu. Hmm i look at it a bit closer...
    Ruismaker definitely and Noir too.

Well, it is lowest on the list. But it is lighter than Drumcomputer and Drambo.
Okay, I moved it to "worth mentioning".

Just to be clear, I was referring to Loopy Pro as a DSP saver as a host, not a plugin. It probably doesn't bring a lot to the table as a plugin. Sure, you can capture to audio and then disable the input plugin(s), but in AUM this isn't the same as in Loopy Pro as a host. Plugins still take a significant amount of resources even when disabled in AUM.

Hmm ok i will double check this. The @FredAntonCorvest apps are low in cpu but they are in the middle field for me.

For me it was clear. ;) But you can use it as a sampler too.

  • @wim Yeah...the Loopy Pro AU has become more efficient recently, but there is a big jump between the CPU usage of Ruismaker and Loopy Pro. One could argue that it doesn't belong on the list either. "CPU efficient drum apps" is a short list.

If you're just using it as a sample player, with the window closed, it's not bad. As an animated control surface, the AU isn't very CPU-friendly.

It’s typically somewhat relative based on many factors like device, memory, memory threshold, free space, but also what patch the synth has loaded. Some patches on some synths with lots of stuff going on and internal effects will make a dent, compared to the internal fx turned off. More things too, but there are many factors involved. So performance will vary.

These are based on my observations from my own device. This is not my opinion on the app, I love Every app I listed, it’s just how they perform on my device in general.

In general it seems KQ Dixie and Bram Bos apps are very light.

I think Tal and OB-Xd are pretty light for what they do.

Lagrange & Continua are nice and Light.

    Zeeon, Hillman synth do well.

Mood, Electric, and Accordion all perform quite well also…

Some of Heavy hitters I’ve noticed, Fab Filter FX, Moog Apps, Pure synth platinum and the Midiculous apps aka gospel musicians. Drum Computer, Others too, but this is off the top.

  • One thing that always helps with cpu, but admittedly “closes off” your device so to speak is airplane mode.

Freezing individual audio tracks really helps. Or recording or looping the audio instead of having tons of midi signals churning away, sequencing a track… more audio will lighten the load.

Definitely in the super light category.

That is a pretty good list, I agree with most of it, if not all. I forgot to mention poison in my list.

  • @Poppadocrock Thanks! Mood, Hillman, and Zeeon would definitely go in my "Worth Mentioning" category. But Zeeon would be there just because it's my most-used synth of all time. Much like FAC Drumkit or Loopy Pro, it's more like "something that I'm often willing to make room for, even though it uses a medium amount of CPU".

I also seem to remember TAL being pretty light, and it's one of the most realistic analog emulations.

My standards for what qualifies as a low CPU drum app are looser than my standards for what qualifies as a low CPU synth, because my list is based on "What am I planning to use when I'm sketching?"

I like Loopy Pro's fast sample browser, and FAC Drumkit allows me to dial in the drum sound I'm looking for; synth layer, sample layer, low pass, high pass.

  • Great list, should be put on the wiki. I think all the iceGear apps quite low on CPU. Don’t forget about Burns Audio apps.

  • Poison-202 & miRack

  • I find the Tal Uno lighter then Zeeon. Poison is the lightest I've found.

  • All great suggestions / I believe I have most of these apps. I had an AUM session with using the TB apps on my mix bus and it saved a lot of cpu. Might have to roll with that until I get the new iPad

These are so light, I find an excuse to throw one or two into a project to double something up sometimes.

  • Moodunits is really lights and sounds great. Not as tweakable as a full synth but I use it a lot.

  • AU3FX: Peak, Dub, Push, Space

    thank you @j_liljedahl Kymatica

4Pockets apps and Bleass FX apps are pretty light. They work well on my Air 2.

And they work on older versions of iOS (iOS 12 or higher?).

  • Audio Damage EOS 2, Dubstation 2 & Quatromod are my goto fx for bread & butter reverb, delay & chorus. they each use significantly less cpu in my tests than others i've tried. and they sound great imo. perfect for when i just need efficient, basic fx.
