Compact audio interface with usb hub in 2022?

edited February 2022 in Other

I'm looking for an audio interface with a usb hub with the idea to power my (lightning equipped) ipad and synth (microfreak) and do audio routing duties without a million dongles and hubs. Once upon a time there was the novation audiohub but it's long gone (and no second hand ones where i live). So far I've found the Audiofuse (but it's super expensive) or the M-Audio Airhub (which might be a bit TOO basic).

Anyone got experience with these or know any other good alternatives? The smaller the better since I mostly 'work' on the sofa so need to be mobile.

P.S. i think i'd at least 2 usb host plugs - 1 for the synth and one to power the ipad, since with the CCK you actually need 2 cables - one for charging and one for data (or should i better upgrade my ipad :)

  • @mangecoeur . Does your iPad have a Lightning connector or USB-C? If it is Lightning, will you be getting a USB-C iPad in the future?

  • lightning, though i'm thinking of upgrading at some point (so I don't mind extra dongles for lightning if i can get rid of them when i got usb-c)

  • eh, just double checked the m-audio AirHub and realised that what I thought was a line in plug is just a headphone jack so that's out since I need a synth input. Currently looking at the iRig I/O - will charge the ipad but not power the synth, but at least the price is reasonable...

  • You might want to look at the iConnectivity AUDIO4C. It might be a little more than you’re looking for. 4 in, 4 out with a USB- MIDI HOST port, that you then plug a hub into. The port will handle up to 8 MIDI devices, through the hub, but midi only, no audio. It is made for linking up a device and computer so they play very nicely together giving you 18 channels of audio to configure how you want between device and computer and all kinds of midi routing options. The device input is USB-c and will power a like equipped device, but I have to use a CCK to get power to my 2nd gen Pro.

  • @Sawiton thanks, it does look very complete although a bit expensive (was hoping to spend less on my audio interface than on my synth!).

Another thought stuck me for a true cheapo option is just a headset to headphones /mic splitter cable, so i can record the synth but still get ipad audio out. Means i have charger cables around (boo) but costs under 10quid (Yay)

Yes. But you have potential problems with crosstalk; the strong audio out signal modulating the input. That's not a problem for headphones/mic in "normal" use, but this is not normal. I believe this is what the original iRig (not Pro) did. Worth a try, though, if the price is right.

I think the time has passed for new audio interface products that connect by Lightning (not USB) and supply power over the Lightning connection. Any new gear targeted to iPads is going to be USB-C. Just my opinion, of course.

  • @uncledave good point, i had been thinking more about the AD quality (for my needs the ipads internal one is fine) but true that crossing signal paths in a cheap splitter might make a mess. The iRig 2 might be an option - im thinking to start with cheap stuff and do a big upgrade to usb-c everything when i get a new ipad, its a lot less hassle than lightning adapters.

You may not have been following the numerous USB-C threads in this forum. At least Lightning is well defined. With USB-C you have chaos of hubs and docks, and the complexity of multi-voltage USB-C Power Delivery. Maybe by the time you (and I) get there, the tech will be sorted out.

I have followed a bit, i originally chose a lightning ipad over a usb c one because at the time usb c was a big mess. It seems to be improving slowly, though I'm still waiting for an ipad pro that really deserves the pro name (which will be when it’s possible to write software for the ipad on the ipad itself - real software that is not just “playgrounds”)

  • For posterity : i found a second hand irig (1) for a fiver. Works just fine. Doubt i would even notice the difference with an entry level audio interface.
