Gadget Taipei similar?

Hello,

Just wondering if there is any MIDI effect that can do what the Korg Gadget instrument Taipei can do?

Thanks again!

Mark.

  • That’s the midi out gadget correct? What specific functionality where you trying to replicate? Or are you asking if there’s something similar with all these different functions included? Ie CC, LFO, Keyboard, Scale Keyboard, chord keyboard, Arp keyboard?

  • You could buy a Korg nanoKey Studio. It delivers all of this in hardware and is actually the controller for Korg’s Gadgets.

Drambo and Mozaic come to mind. Mozaic has nice large controls and Drambo lets you build a MIDI effect like you'd build a modular synth.

  • Thanks guys.

I I’m really just looking for the chord/scale key feature. I do have mozaic .

    ChordBud, ScaleBud maybe?

This combo looks really tempting. Gadget is great, and a dedicated controller sounds even better.

The XY pad on the NanoKEY Studio is garbage IMO. If you're used to a nice smooth screen XY experience, the NKS is nothing like it. You have to press just the right amount, and it can jump and skip. I bought it for that feature, but never use it. (Still appreciate the NKS, but not for that reason.)

    Gadget integration is nice though.

In terms of the X/Y specifically I think it’s ok, not quite garbage but not anything special either. You are right about it being a little finicky, and jumpy. I sometimes use it for arps, or even better set the scale on the controller, so when you play chords on the keys, you can use the xy pad to play accompanying notes in scale. Which is kind of cool, but overall I wish it was a little more precise.

Scale Bud 2 just came out and it would do that perfectly. You can add several rows of chords and notes in over 110 scales.

Tonality can do this as well. It has presets to set up chords or notes in a scale as Au pads to play.

Chordbud will only sequence chords, not notes, but as mentioned above scalebud 1, or even better scale Bud 2 would be perfect for you.

There’s a couple good IAA options too, like Navichord, Chordion, and Keynality, all IAA, All send virtual midi out, and all 3 can do chords and keys at same time.

Using Gadget with the Korg controllers in native mode is phenomenal. I think there’s nothing that beats this combo for developing ideas and getting into the creative flow without any friction. I have a nanoKontrol 2 and the nanoKeys Studio. The NK2 lets you control transport and mixer, arm tracks. The NKS lets you control the instruments, drum pads and knobs are automatically mapped, the NKS follows the scale you select with the Gadget. It‘s definitely a dream team and the controllers are also quite cheap. The only drawback is that the NKS is not very precise. The knobs only have half of the possible resolution. They always change the value by 2. Sometimes you can hear the jumps when sweeping filters.
