"New" iOS 8 feature? Width sensitive touch!

edited June 2014 in General App Discussion

This is very interesting... as it will likely apply to music apps! http://www.fastcodesign.com/3032009/why-drawing-on-the-ipad-just-got-way-better

From the link:

Amongst countless updates in iOS 8 is a powerful feature that most of us missed: The iPad’s touch screen can now recognize objects of various size. So instead of treating a thumb or pinky as the same sized orb, it can accommodate the precision necessary for the Pencil’s tip to begin simulating the multitude of subtle thicknesses we’d find in any natural drawing tool.

It looks like Apple is bringing back the functionality that got banned from some music apps that used touch size to simulate pressure sensitivity. Funny thing is this is being touted as a "new" feature. Wasn't this in Orphion in 2012? And maybe Cantor too?

  • This is good news indeed :)

  • Hah! What's the betting it'll be drawing apps only...

  • Maybe apple fears that people will break the ipad screen on beat making!

    oh cool! :)

yeah it was in orphion some time ago - but you weren't supposed to use that api ... remember the drama?

    so yes, this is new

  • It' still in Orphion, just hidden.

  • This is very good news for us who use the ipad as a digital sketchbook with a stylus!
This, and the possible enhancement of the IAA implementation makes me say: bring it on IOS8!

  • I am so happy right now. Also, it's a newly exposed property on UITouch. So bombs away!

  • Great news all round.

Yes still have the "oldversion" of morphion with the sensitive touch on my "old" pad1
    :-)

They have to kick it out...patent/copyright represives i think....

    @sonosaurus
Good to read that you like it ;-)

  • Looking forward to seeing finger area sensitivity in Thumbjam, Drumjam, and TC-Data ;)

Shhh, it's in the current version also, developer just turned it into an Easter Egg that must be activated by the user.

Exactly! My excitement about this feature means nothing, but I'm glad to see some devs excited about it too :-)

  • Having used the hidden area sensing features in Orphion, Cantor and Mugician, I have reservations, as I don't find it a natural analogue for velocity sensing and I suspect this is what devs will try to use it for. It makes a better aftertouch control, IMO...

It would be useful when trying to edit text, getting the cursor in the right place between letters of a word where you mispelt it....;)

Is it easy to do, I have Orphion?

  • It was easy, but damned if I can remember where the instructions were. It's been a long time.
    Sorry for the tease.

    From http://orphion.tumblr.com/

"In Orphion 1.5.2 you can activate the old articulation gesture again by this trick: Go to the last page of the info window and double-tap on the version number."

This still works for current versions

  • Seems that apple have hobbled the touch radius in iOS8. Works well in iOS7 with _pathMajorRadius. In iOS8 the values are not smooth and seem to able to be only a few discrete sizes. Massive Fail.

Yes, for whatever reason, once they legitimately added the finger area radius to the public API the values are highly quantized and less than useful.

  • I'm hoping force touch brings this back in iOS 9. Even if it is only activated on new devices. Rumors are saying it will be better than the iWatch version of forceTouch. I guess we'll find out tomorrow?
