Surprised to say that first impressions are not great. There are only maybe a dozen presets, and they all sound kind of anemic with a really unappealing fizzy sound on the decay. I’m sure that my two distracted minutes before work is not the ideal test. If only there were some devoted guitar player on the forums who might play through this amp on several videos, teasing out the idiosyncrasies and FLOW of the HiVolt. Ah, well, we can always dream.
ADDENDA: A restart of the ipad cleared it up. All good.
I loved the beta, and I’ll compare it to the release tonight. There shouldn’t be any fizz, just rich cleans that get ballsy and growl when cranked.
I don’t have this amp but I have found with the Nembrini amps that I should ignore the presets and dial in my own sounds… and if I am not using my own IRs, it is important to try each of the built-in ones to find ones that you like - if any - the difference in sound can be pretty dramatic from IR to IR
The fizz is weird. It’s like I have a half-empty Altoids tin on my amp that vibrates after every chord. Again, it was an impulse buy and i just slotted into an existing session. I’ll try again later.
So I deleted the HiVolt and redownloaded it. Still sounded awful. The fizz remained, but beyond that, the overall sound was like a free amp sim that came with a first generation iRig. I was like, maybe I just don't know what I'm doing and I have terrible ears.
I am hugely relieved to say that restarting the iPad fixed it: The fizz, the Altoid tin, the anemic tone — all gone. This amp is fantastic in the most subtle ways. It really fills a gap for me.
Is this quite a bit different than a Marshall? I’ve never played one or been around someone who had one that I can recall. I swear I have to be the only competent guitar player in the world who knows fuck all about tone
Great to hear that. I bought it but haven’t had time to check it out. I love everything Nembrini so I’m sure this one’ll be terrific, too.
It sounds nothing like a Marshall. The real DR103 (I have one) is a very, very clean amp with masses of headroom. It’s perfect for pedals - kinda like a PA with character.
Interesting. I really love Nembrini’s apps. Might give it a go soon.
There are some interesting articles online about Hiwatt. I particularly like the military grade construction.
I'm not a tone junky either. I can usually find a setting that "will do" in minutes. I prefer playing to tweaking. As I've gotten older though I'm a little more fussy. But I'm too far gone to care about "my sound". Recently I did some research, about 6 months, to find an amp that I will just use forever. I seem to grow sick of a sound pretty quickly. I settled on an EVH 5150 EL34. It's versatile which helps. My intention is for this amp to end my pursuit of the perfect amp.
I've now had a play with this amp (on desktop anyway) and overall I'd say I'm very pleased to have it.
It's very hard to compare meaningfully my actual amp (extremely loud) with a plugin (headphones or relatively low level monitors) but I reckon I can get it pretty close.
However, the plugin goes into crunch and beyond pretty quickly, both with the pre-amp knobs and the master vol knob. This is not at all how mine behaves (which never even gets to crunch at any volume I've been able to play at, including on stage) but I know of some out there that do. I know that mine has 'standard' parts (I've compared it with the circuit diagram) so I've always suspected that others have been hot-rodded in some way but I don't know.
At low settings I can get it to sound close enough to my real amp to make me happy. However I really don't rate the IRs that Nembrini bundle it with and can get a much more credible tone with the 3 Sigma Audio Hiwatt/Fane IRs that I have.
Add a few choice pedals out the front and it's delicious for the stuff I do.
Ah yeah I watched a few videos about it and can see the appeal, didn’t realize how many great guitarists used it. Welp I’ll have to get this one now cos it sounds great and I use a lot of effects
It truly is great for pedals. I mean, that's how David Gilmour uses it after all. He doesn't use the Hiwatts to give him any crunch or distortion at all.
In later years (mid to late 80s) he bypassed the pre-amp and used an Alembic F-2 pre-amp (essentially a Fender pre-amp) and just used the power amp of the Hiwatts. It's a shame we can't do that with this one...
I am struggling to get a truly clean sound out of this. I need to turn the input almost all the way down on the "rack" page and even then if any of the volume or gain knobs goes past 9 o'clock some crunch sneaks in. It is a bit frustrating given that this amp is supposed to be great for pristine cleans.

It’s kinda funny given that the real amp is ridiculously loud!
I’m not sure why they (Igor, I presume) felt the need to make it go crunchy so soon. It’s not at all like the real thing in that regard from my experience. At least they could have explained their thinking: we wanted to take this amp to new places, or something. Or have an ‘authentic’ switch that made it stay clean longer.

It’s just a guess, but when you look at the Nembrini line-up, it seems every amp is advertised as being capable of going from “crystal clean” to “overdriven distortion.” Mostly though, it appears they lean more to the heavy side of the tonal spectrum. Instead of including a classic Fender Twin or Deluxe model, the Fender they chose to emulate is a Tonemaster — which was more of a hard rock amp.
The majority of their other amps are aimed at the hard rock/metal crowd as well. It seems as though they are appealing to these types of players and/or perhaps they feel that area of the market is underserved.
You can squeeze some decent clean sounds out of most of their amps, but it’s a small spectrum of their sonic range and you really gotta work at it.
That’s very true, @SNystrom. Nembrini amps do not dwell in the clean end of things.
This is the only DR103 plug-in AFAIK and it’s not (IMO) an accurate representation of the actual amp. Such a shame and a missed opportunity.
I wish Mike Scuffham would do a Hiwatt. I’m still more of an S-Gear player than anything else even though I have a few Nembrinis, TH-U and Axiom. S-Gear really excels at cleans. Sorry - these are all desktop, I know.
I feel like this is true for basically all Nembrini amps I own (5 or 6). Seems like 90% of presets are distorted in some way or another. I like to start cleanish and have more dynamics so that it might crunch some as you pick louder. On Nembrini amps I always go to the input knob and set it at around 1. I agree, they go into crunch territory too soon.
I find this with most of the amp sims, a thousand different strains of overdrive/distortion but you really have to work to get a clean sound at a reasonable volume.
Gain stage vintage clean is still probably the easiest in this respect for me.
I love the hiwatt, personally. But if you want clean, look into the PSA 1000 or the Jr. Fantastic Nembrini preamp.
huh. is this a gain staging issue? i run -18db peaks into Hivolt & am getting nice clean tones with input at 10-11 o'clock. & i see pretty much the same behavior from the BgExtasy. Hivolt a bit smoother perhaps, & good with pedals. still loving BgExtasy, but quite happy with Hivolt as a complement.
I love Nembrini and TH-U but GSVC gets a lot of use here.

Good point which I’ve seen made about level into AUv3 in general - what is the level expected by the plug-in? I record circa -14 dBFS which is much closer to your -18 than 0 … Metering with 0 dBVU marked at nominal level could be quite useful as an indication on any non-linear processor.

It is not the case that AUv3 need a maximum input level of -18dB for correct operation. The input gain knob can adjust the incoming gain. Even with it set low, the crunch starts early on Nembrini amps. It doesn’t have to be like that. It was a developer choice not a technical limitation.
Of course the nominal input level is a developer choice, it is arbitrary but useful for a user to know! As you say an input trim can be used to match the input level to the plug-in. Again, really helpful to know where you should be aiming! This is typically easier with compressors as a gain reduction meter provides the necessary guidance.
