Behringer TD3 MO Sounds amazing - But what’s it all about? 😀

Here is a video I was just watching from Joey at Blush Response - I’m thinking about ordering one of these.
When he plays it - It sounds great (but on other videos I have seen it’s not so good) - I have no idea about what he is putting it through or what most of the inputs are for. Can someone help explain please.
I can’t make out what he says he is putting it through at 1.24 & 5.52 - Trip Ditch / Trip Dix or something?

Also Filter In, Filter FM in And Filter CV in along the top? I assume they mean along the lines that you can apply different types of filter to the sound and modulate it in some way with the CV. Whatever it is I want to try it 😀 - so I plug the little cable into the jack on the device - but where does the other end go to send in these signals? Do I need some sort of modular hardware with inputs everywhere and cables hanging out of it (that cost five times as much as the synth itself), or is there a £4.99 iOS app that will do the job?….. better still could I have an app already that I can use 🤠. The same question applies to the accent, slide, gate and cv in - what is used to engage with these features?

I don’t understand why there is no trigger in …. Is one of the above the same as this? There is a trigger in on the Roland TB 03 - but there doesn’t seem to be one on the TD3’s

Anyway here’s the video - I hope you enjoy it if you haven’t seen it. It won’t be for everyone, that’s for sure 😃

Your ears are correct, on the other videos ;)

The dude is just talking rubbish (probably paid for), it does sound like shit, but not any next level of... >:)
It‘s been a while that I’ve auditioned a real TB303, but I have a lot of quality fx, some of the grainy kind, some of the smooth.
That „modded out“ clearly is in the elcheapo league of post pro, I expected something way different.
Note that this is not one of my usual B disses.
I hoped to be helpful with the fx handling, but nothing in the video is worth any details.

So here are my (independent) few cents for that kind of mono sounds:

Instead of (typical) reverb, use dense delay patterns that may approach reverb character.
It keeps the punch of the attacks and doesn‘t blur them.
Take your time to tweak delay and feedback for each particular sound, usually there are a couple of sweet spots that really stand out.
Delay times in this case may be extremely short, and that‘s what makes the synth sound kind of beef up.
Amazing Noises Reverb (using the feedback delay network algorithm) is an example, but clean ambience reverbs may work similiar.

With such sounds you may split the path into a main part playing the slightly emphasized sound (with the fake reverb delay) and a more „effected“ addition with wider settings for ping pong or room or whatever pleases.

    maybe this??

  • 😂 I think you are possibly both right. It does sound a bit underwhelming until he casually mentions ‘I’ll just pop it through the Tryptych’ …. a £379 Eurorack Filter & Processor Module….. ah that’s better 🥳.
I’ll try the delay and reverb tricks - thanks.

  • It's truly awful sounding. Fine for heavy-duty Tresor style nonsense, but with none of the organic funky ooze a genuine 303 is known for.

I've purchased a few Behringer synths and in that rare 1 in 10 example that goes against the mediocrity grain they stand up well. My last Behringer purchase was their Arp 2600, and I'm really happy with that.

But the TD3 (and MO variant) most certainly isn't one of the 1 in 10.

  • That's surprising as the filter is pretty well understood at this point and easy enough to build as a hobbyist.

I like my Pro-1. But I'm not interested in the TD3.

I do have an old FB383 rack mount (sequencer-less) clone I recently rescued from my Mum's loft. if it still works it might be fun controlling it from Rozeta baseline. It does have the possibility of using the filter with external audio. Might be fun running the Pro-1 through it to ruin it.

The FB383 did actually sound really good (at least I liked it back in the 90s), especially with a bit of added overdrive or full-on distortion.

(I'm kidding myself that I'll ever get the time... But I am my own boss and have the intention to re-home my old 19" racks and patch them all into a couple of patchbays at the office. I'll still never get time to use them but at least if they're all patched in there's the slightest chance that I might use them again one day!)

  • Nothing wrong with the first TD3 in my opinion. I have it and have listened to Acid since the beginning. It does the trick for me.
I’ve not seen the vid on the MO yet, so will check it out later.

I’ve got fond memories of the Freebass, which I picked up at Turnkey on Charing Cross Rd back in the day (and thinking about it, I forget exactly when I lost/sold/gave away my unit). It may have been missing a huge amount in terms of being a true 303 clone but it’s 18dB per Octave filter in combo the modulation and amplitude circuits made for a great live tweakers delight.

I used to enjoy day trips to the big smoke to go to Turnkey. The FB was a turnkey special.

Most of my music gear in the 90s came from there. Shame it's no more.

  • I have the TD-3 and it’s the only Behringer anything I own.

It’s dead on accurate as a 303 and I have compared to the real deal.

I also have a lot of vintage Roland synths and it hangs just fine with them. I actually bought it just to sequence my SH-2 and SH-09.

The 110 module is perfect for that old Roland sound too and only $100.

    It lives!

Sounds freaking great, especially through the SE-70!
