Anybody playing Volcas, Basslines (TD3 TB03) or synths in general through iOS effects?

I can see that they work well for guitars - just as good for synths I assume? There doesn’t seem to be much in the way of videos out there to listen to. I’m thinking mainly of something like a 303 type baseline through Tonestack distortions and delays - and of course experimenting with all the rest of it. Any thoughts?

  • Yeah I’ll use a lot of iOS effects for my synths and td3 but I run them through a hardware tube preamp, compressor, and eq and then use iOS effects for more processing. I’ll usually use fabfilter effects cos Saturn and Timeless are so versatile but I’ve experimented with all the distortion stuff and delays and reverbs i have and it always sounds good. The 303 stuff is awesome with a lot of the grit and delay apps, Phoenix is a great one cos it emulates a handful of preamps and does it really well and adds a lot of warmth and tb reelbus is great too for that. Ratshack reverb sounds awesome with my td3 cos it gets so lofi sounding and fits the sound really well

  • I play the modern Mellotron through iOS effect on an iPad. Lots of example on my YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/c/synthblock

Just subbed to your channel, great stuff!

  • I actually don’t own any hardware effects so all of my synths get ran through iOS effects. Works like a dream. Microfreak or CS through Alteza is heavenly.

Interesting that you should say this.
I don't currently have a hardware synth, my microKorg needs to be repaired
but I've been using TonesStacks Pro on my current selection of tracks
    and it's really cool.
The foot pedal effects are in mono so a user would have to use the ABY utility
to get stereo but the studio effects are in stereo.
You can get some really nice sounds happening.

I posted up a track very early this morning and the drums are being glued
together using ToneStack Pro using Eq and two compressors.
Some of the softsynths also have ToneStack Pro effects on them.
It's got some really good effects and you can link as many as you like
dependent upon your iPad's capabilities cpu wise.
I find the auv3 version very light on resources.

No problem. I have a couple Mellotron apps on my iPad, but if I ever get the chance I’ll own a hardware one. Definitely dream gear territory for me.

  • Fabfilter and eventide all day baby

  • Yep since about 2014 iirc. Flux:FX was essential for my live improv and now it’s replaced with various AUv3. I still need something that does reverse loops like Flux:FX…

  • I was torn between two bass amps, but then Mammoth went on sale.
Gonna plug in my TD-03, Kaossilator, PO-20, MC-303 and EMX (maybe not all today ) for some testing with them synth/rompler basses

  • BTW, I used to love to patch some random stuff on Sunvox and use as FX some years ago. It's really fun. Others I haven't tried but know are capable too is Drambo, Mirack and Zmors

I’ll usually connect an old phone to the effects loop of my mixer and dial in an Eventide reverb as required.

  • I do (both ways, also run iOS synths to hardware effects, probably do this more actually) but also have to consider mono vs. stereo effects, which brings up something I've been curious about:

Is there a list somewhere that shows if an iOS effect app is mono or stereo?

  • I do, but naughtily I mostly forget to record dry signals 😬
