thanks for the list, there are a few that i haven’t heard of i’m excited to go check them out.
Very useful, thanks .
Here’s some others
Chords
Klimper and Kord
Chord map 2
Guide Track
Melody
Fortamento
iSongwriter
Drums
Different Drummer
GarageBand
Good topic @MobileMusicPro
@BiancaNeve hit a few I was thinking of like fortamento, and Isongwriter, but there’s a few more worth mentioning…
Stravinski - Melody - free has midi out
Beatonal - a little like figure, but more flushed out, with $2.99 IAP to unlock midi out Virtual Midi. A hidden gem if you ask me.
Bud apps
Scalebud 2 - scalebud one was mentioned but 2 is now available.
MelodyBud - Melody creator
SnakeBud - notes to make melody or whatever.
Dot Melody - can place all dots or generate everything, 3 separate tracks, each with midi out.
Polybeat- from cykle developer, for drums, can generate beats
Mozaic - has so many generative or semi generative scripts for creating drum beats, song building, chord progression building scripts, Arp scripts, melody scripts, bassline scripts, etc…
Zoa - generative- easily used to create something.
Chordsgen - nice but subscription for better results and more exports.
Chordion - great app with Arp built in, IAA and midi out
Songwizard- same developer as Isongwriter, Isongwriter
Songsmith- simple chord progression builder
Chord Ai - simple progression builder
Shyne! - simple audio song maker
Aphelian- Arp and sequence creator
Arpeggionome - crazy arps
Thesys - generative or Manual sequencer
Digikeys - can generate piano riffs
Midi strummer - can generate guitar riffs
Digistix 1 & 2 - can create random patterns
Drum Computer - great generative sequencer
Soundgrail- simple progression builder
Keynality- chord and key pads midi out IAA
Synthecaster - synth, but also midi out keys with bending and movement
Melody cs - tap to place melody on a square
MelodyMiner
Audanika - chords
Navichord - chord and note playing or sequencing
I’m sure there’s even more, but that’s long enough, lol. There’s also a lot of great websites, web apps, and web tools out there for free right in the browser. Wolfram Music comes to mind.
Piano Motifs!
Lol. I thought that was mentioned so I left it out. One of the best.
Tune Maker was getting some love in the forum recently: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/tune-maker-compose-music/id1489705836
I like Pensato for scales (and I view it as a complement to Tonality and Tonaly, though Tonality does a lot more): https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pensato/id1453592849
Another one I have found useful now that I know a bit more about music theory than I did before is Music Theory Illustrated: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/music-theory-illustrated/id1440488249
I've mostly been using it for a quick reference when I want to find specific music intervals from a root note.
Bass Lines ( and other instruments) Pure Acid
Def pure acid it’s just as great as a midi sequencer as it is a groovebox.
Here's another one: A tape recorder or dictation software.
I get the best ideas when I'm just walking around or driving somewhere and I use the "Voice Memos" app on the iPhone. Being able to record an idea right when one pops into my mind is invaluable. Then I can work it out on the iPad or computer later.
Polyhymnia in Xequence.
All these suggestions are amazing you guys rock! Going to be adding a few to the post
I considered this but didn’t add it. I guess I was on the fence if it fit or not, but it does, It’s the same sorta deal with Xynthsizer and it’s generative game of life & rules feature.
Gadget has that cool instadrummer slider thing too. Drum gadgets only.
Only the drum Gadgets have the instadrummer slider thing, but once you have set up a pattern you can change the instrument to a non-drum instrument and the pattern will play with the new sound.
Fugee machine and other sequencers with multiple playheads can generate interesting note patterns.
And from my memory, I think Hammerhead and AR-909 have a random beat generator, I don't have my Ipad around at the moment.
From my experience a lot of apps overlap with other apps, like 70-80%, for example if you own Navichord, Suggester, Tonality, they can do (kind of) the same. You find out afterwards, when you bought them all.
Awesome list so far... But in Vader's voice... "The lack of Navichord, Quantum, Tune Maker+Chordflow and Audanika is disturbing"
Other personal favorites (besides some already mentioned): Dot Melody, Jam Maestro, Yamaha Mobile Music Sequencer (the iOS version of a QY), Youcompose, Chordbot
@senhorlampada YouCompose is basically non functional as it crashes every time on opening.
HarmonyWiz still works and is an alternative.
I mentioned some of those, Navichord, audanika, but I knew I was missing some too.
I was also just thinking about that app refraktions, I don’t have it but I wonder how it’s been getting along with updates.
True. I left fugue out intentionally since you have to input notes, but it’s a great app and it makes a good case for this category. It’s not far off some of the other apps mentioned and with a few notes on the sequencer it does create a “song shortcut” with the 4 playheads. So yes definitely fugue machine.
Seriously? Sad to hear... What device/OS are you on? On my iPad Mini 2 with iOS 12 it still works
I missed some mentions. Sorry
Refraktions was working fine last time I tried. Not that I ever got too deep into it
I have Prochords 2, for a long time already, since Ipad 1
http://prochords.dk/w/
It suggest the next chord in a sequence, with more stars for chords that should better fit.
I have to say I don't use it that much, in the end I rather judge by ear, just poke around in other chord apps until I have found something pleasing. But it could be a handy app for more out of the box Chord sequences.
Thanks for this. Some apps I haven’t heard of it yet in this thread. I love the melody generator apps for inspiration, quick samples, etc. also really love the Pagefall apps, Cality and Autony in particular. Need to look some more into these chord pads apps. Only have a couple now.
I know it’s a subscription app, but I think Songen warrants a mention too. I have found it really helpful for sparking ideas.
I like all of those sorts of things and use them a lot. But as far as “short-cuts”, I think that even though these apps can spew out quantities of notes, for me it’s usually time-consuming to weed out what’s actually useful to build upon. Or it’s like mining raw ore and then sifting and refining the giant piles of notes to find the precious metal or gems (if any) lurking somewhere in there.
