Do You Know From Moondog?

edited February 2022 in Other

I used to see the Viking of 6th Avenue in NYC in the 70s. He was a fixture. I didn’t know then that he composed 80 symphonies, blind. He knew everybody who was anybody,

  • Ah thank you! Did not know him. Only know this really good song:

  • He was phenomenal; I came to NYC too late to see him.

  • Never heard of him or his work... I'm impressed with his melodic ideas and hypnotic rhythmic structures.

I first came across his amazing work from the use of this in that other cult classic, The Big Lebowski. Great movie. Great soundtrack. Great intro to Moondog.

(Spoilers if you, unaccountably, haven’t seen it yet. Where have you been living? Under a rock? Or on the streets… ? [Though, in fact, and despite appearances to the contrary, he was, says Wikipedia’s interesting article on him, rarely if ever actually homeless, despite appearances to the contrary] )

Also according to Wikipedia, he is reported to have said, when asked about his ‘slithery’ time signatures, and use of ambient environmental sounds in his work:

“I'm not gonna die in 4/4 time.”

That’s a cool epitaph, right there.

And may I also offer, in the pantheon of outsider US composers, the equally innovative and influential Harry Partch?

  • Love Moondog.

  • My favorite album:

  • This is a great documentary of Moondog. He states the debt Jazz owes to Native American drumming.
